Jamie Spears, the father of pop music icon Britney Spears, has formally filed to end the 13-year conservatorship that has seen him oversee his daughter's life and finances.

As reported by NBC News, the 69-year-old's petition to the Los Angeles County Superior Court states that Britney "is entitled to have this Court now seriously consider whether this conservatorship is no longer required."

Referring to Britney's ongoing legal battle to have her father removed from what she has described as an "abusive" conservatorship, Jamie's petition adds: "Recent events related to this conservatorship have called into question whether circumstances have changed to such an extent that grounds for establishment of a conservatorship may no longer exist."

Per BBC News, the filing continues: "Ms Spears has told this Court that she wants control of her life back without the safety rails of a conservatorship," and adds that the chart-topper has also shared her wish to oversee her own medical and financial care.

"As Mr Spears has said again and again, all he wants is what is best for his daughter," it adds.

"If Ms Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr Spears believes that she should get that chance."

Jamie's filing comes after Britney's highly publicized two-year battle to have her father removed from the role.

Back in July, the 39-year-old singer told Judge Brenda Penny: "This conservatorship is literally allowing my dad to rule my life… that is abuse, and we all know it. I’m angry, and I will go there."

The 'Womanizer' singer added that she was forced to take psychological tests against her will, and had her blood drawn multiple times a week. She said that in doing so, she would regain control of her life. "I did it all and they lied…they did nothing. They didn’t end it, and I kept working," she said.

Britney's outspoken battle led to the '#FreeBritney' campaign on social media, as fans joined the conversation to have the singer released from the conservatorship.

NBC News reports that as per Jamie Spears' recent filing, he has requested that his daughter does not undergo a new psychological evaluation in order to officially terminate the guardianship.

The filing states: "The conservatorship has helped Ms. Spears get through a major life crisis, rehabilitate and advance her career, and put her finances and her affairs in order. But recently, things have changed.

"Ms. Spears is now outspoken in her frustration with the level of control imposed by a conservatorship, and has pleaded with this Court to 'let her have her life back.'"

Britney's newly-appointed and personally selected attorney, Mathew Rosengart, has described the filing as "vindication" for the singer.

However, he added in a statement on Tuesday: "It appears that Mr. Spears believes he can try to avoid accountability and justice, including sitting for a sworn deposition and answering other discovery under oath, but as we assess his filing — which was inappropriately sent to the media before it was served on counsel — our investigation will continue."
