A year and a half since the tragic death of One Direction star Liam Payne, the staggering fortune his nine-year-old son is set to inherit has been revealed.
The UK High Court confirmed in probate documents that the late popstar’s son, Bear Gray Payne, will acquire £21 million ($28 million).
Payne, who died aged 31 after he fell from the third floor of the Casa Sur Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on October 16, 2024, did not leave a will, so a court has had to decide how his estate will be managed.
The child’s mother, Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Cole, and music industry lawyer Richard Bray were named as administrators of Liam’s estate in a grant of probate issued last year, however they were only given the power to collect and preserve his assets.
In a new move, Letters of Administration now allow part of the large sum of money to be spent to help raise Bear, and the rest is required to be preserved in a trust that he will be able to access when he turns 18.
Payne’s £21 million ($28 million) fortune includes his five-bedroom house in Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire, which he bought for £3.25 million ($4.3 million) in 2021, following his split from the 'Fight for This Love' singer.
At the time of his death, Payne was living with his girlfriend of two years, Influencer Kate Cassidy. Sources close to the grieving partner say that she does not intend to make any claim against his estate or how it is being handled, despite laws that may have entitled her to do so.
In a recent interview with The Sun, Cassidy defended her relationship against people who criticized her.
She told the newspaper: "So you know when people come and point a finger at me, saying, ‘You took an allowance and you had living expenses,’ or whatever, at the end of the day it’s nobody’s business except for me and Liam.
"I never [asked him for money]. Yeah, it’s upsetting but it’s just about having thick skin and I’m never going to let anybody tell me how my relationship was with Liam.
"The only two people that really know how strong a relationship was are me and Liam."
