Harvey Weinstein will be charged with two counts of indecent assault against a woman in London, BBC News reports.

The Crown Prosecution Service has authorized the Metropolitan Police to charge the disgraced ex-Hollywood producer with two counts of indecent assault against a woman in London in August 1996, it was announced on Wednesday.

Rosemary Ainslie, head of the CPS Special Crime Division, said: "The CPS has authorized the Metropolitan Police to charge Harvey Weinstein with two counts of indecent assault against a woman in August 1996.

"Charges have been authorized against Harvey Weinstein, 70, following a review of the evidence gathered by the Metropolitan Police in its investigation.

"The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that he has the right to a fair trial."

Weinstein is currently serving a 23-year prison sentence in California, after his position as one of the who's who of Hollywood came crashing down when dozens of women came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against him.

Weinstein was sentenced in March 2020 on two counts of sexual assault in New York.  He had been convicted of committing a Criminal Sexual Act in the first degree and third-degree rape in court on February 24.

The sentencing came after Weinstein's New York trial, which started on January 6. His team has said they would appeal the jury's decision to convict him on two of the five charges he faced.

The 70-year-old former film mogul was found guilty of raping a woman in 2013 and forcing oral sex on production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006.

The two convictions, which took five days for a jury in New York to reach on February 24, carried a maximum sentence of 29 years.

Allegations of Weinstein's sexual misconduct were first reported by The New York Times journalists Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey on October 5, 2017.

Within days of the story breaking, more women came forward with their own stories of harassment and abuse and thus the #MeToo movement was born.

Weinstein and his brother Bob co-founded Miramax together, which produced many hugely successful movies including Pulp Fiction, Shakespeare in Love and Sex, Lies, and Videotape.

After leaving Miramax, the two went on to found The Weinstein Company.
