Jack Osbourne has opened up about the devastating moment he learned his father, legendary Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne, had died.
The rock icon, known worldwide as the “Prince of Darkness,” passed away on July 22 at the age of 76. A family statement at the time confirmed Ozzy died “surrounded by love.”
Jack reflects on his father's final weekIn a 16-minute video uploaded to YouTube on Wednesday (September 3), Jack, 39, spoke candidly about his grief and the final memories he shared with his father.
Jack had joined Ozzy for Black Sabbath’s final show on July 5 at Villa Park in Aston, Birmingham. He described his dad as being in good spirits during that time. “My dad was great. He was in a good mood, he was happy,” Jack recalled.
He remained with his family in the U.K. for another week before returning to Los Angeles.
Heartbreakingly, that concert would be the last time he saw his father alive.
The moment Jack learned the newsFighting back tears, Jack described how he was woken in the early hours of the morning at his Los Angeles home.
“I woke up in Los Angeles to a knock on my house door at around 3.45 in the morning,” he said. “Someone who has worked for my family for about 30 years now was knocking on my door and when I looked through my window and I saw it was him, I knew something bad had happened.”
He continued: “I was informed that my father had passed. Immediately just sadness and pain. So many thoughts.
"You go through this level of feeling sad and frustrated and angry. There’s this part of you that’s like, I have to get there now, I have to.”
Although grief consumed him, Jack said there was some comfort in knowing his father was no longer suffering.
“There was a level of like, ‘OK, he’s not struggling. He’s not suffering anymore.’ And that is something,” Jack explained. “I wish he was still here, you know? I wish he was still with us all, but he was having a rough go and I think people saw that at the show.”
Jack admitted that while his father’s health struggles were well known, the suddenness of his death shocked the family. “No one expected it to happen as quickly as it did,” he said.
Ozzy Osbourne, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2019, reportedly died from a heart attack. Despite his declining health in recent years, he remained a towering figure in music until his final days.
Jack closed his message by thanking fans for their overwhelming support: “The love and support have honestly meant the world.”
