Johnny Depp's lawyers have revealed why the actor won't look at ex-wife Amber Heard in court.

The former couple are currently embroiled in a high-profile defamation lawsuit, with the 58-year-old Edward Scissorhands star suing the 36-year-old Aquaman star for $50 million after she referred to herself as a "public figure representing domestic abuse" in an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post back in 2018.

Depp has repeatedly denied the allegations that he was physically violent toward his ex-wife.

Heard is countersuing her ex-husband for $100 million, claiming she was only ever violent against Depp in self-defense or defense of her younger sister, per NBC News.

And those paying close attention to the trial may have noticed that Depp is often photographed looking away from Heard as she testifies on the stand.

On Monday, Depp's lawyers provided the reasoning behind why the actor refuses to make eye contact with his former partner.

As Heard took to the stand to continue her testimony in the case, lawyer Camille Vasquez began to cross-examine the Aquaman star.

In the Fairfax courtroom, Vasquez asked Heard: "Mr. Depp hasn't looked at you once this entire trial, has he?"

To which Heard replied: "Not that I've noticed, no."

Vasquez then asked Heard: "You've looked at [Depp] many times, haven't you?"

"Yes, I have," Heard replied.

The lawyer then asked: "You know exactly why Mr. Depp won't look back at you, don't you?" To which, Heard replied: "I do."

Vasquez then told the court while addressing Heard: "[Depp] promised you you would never see his eyes again, is that true?"

Heard told the lawyer that she did not recall if those were Depp's exact words, before Vasquez played audio of one of the last times the former coupe saw each other; during a meeting at a hotel in San Francisco in 2016.

Per People, Depp had previously testified that he only went to the meeting in order to see if Heard would "retract her lies" - referring to the allegations she has made against him.

The recording can be heard below:

In the audio recording, Heard could be heard asking Depp for a hug, to which he denied. During the heated conversation, he told her: "I'm nothing to you. And I'll always be nothing to you."

He then tells his ex-wife not to try and take his glasses off, before telling her: "You will not see my eyes again!"

Following the recording being played, Vasquez asked Heard: "He's kept that promise, hasn't he?"

"As far as I know, he cannot look at me," Heard replied.
