JoJo Siwa has shared her thoughts on a recent joke made by Miley Cyrus about her sexuality, and while she believes it wasn’t meant to cause harm, she’s not brushing it off either.

It all started at the 2025 WorldPride Dreamland DC event on June 7, when fans were surprised by a video message from Cyrus.
In the clip, the 'Flowers' singer is seen standing inside a food closet, opening with: “Oh my god. I haven’t been in there since the sixth grade. Enjoy coming out of the closet if this Pride is the time for you. It shouldn’t be a month, it should be a year. It should be infinite.”
Later, she added a quip: “I’m going back in the closet to get more pretzels and find JoJo Siwa and bring her back out.”
The comment, seemingly a nod to Siwa’s newly public relationship with Love Island UK star Chris Hughes, sparked mixed reactions. And now, Siwa’s had her say.
On June 12, the 22-year-old shared an Instagram post reflecting on the moment, including throwback pics from her Miley-themed fifth birthday party and more recent moments celebrating the singer.
“I was happy at my 5th birthday having a Miley-themed party, and I’m still happy now at 22,” she wrote.
“If you know me, you know that Miley is my day 1, grew up beyond inspired by her from two years old on.”
Siwa admitted that the joke gave her pause.
“I wasn’t sure how I felt about things for a couple of days… but I’ve started to come to some thoughts,” she wrote. “I don’t believe what Miley said at WorldPride was ill-intended.
"Honestly, I think it was meant to be a joke, just not a very good one haha. Not what the world, or myself, needs to hear any day of the week.”
After reaching out privately, she says Cyrus responded with nothing but love, replying:“All love. Always [sic].”

Siwa ended her message on a note of self-empowerment and encouragement: “The most beautiful thing I’ve learned in the last 5 years is that love is a gorgeous rainbow. Don’t question yourself, don’t second guess yourself, just love… People judge no matter what, and it can be very hard, especially when it comes from someone you love and look up to.”
“You get one life. Hold onto it, make it yours, find your happy, and love.”
The moment comes just weeks after Siwa opened up about her evolving identity. During her time on Celebrity Big Brother UK, she told RuPaul’s Drag Race UK winner Danny Beard that she now identifies as queer.
“I’ve always told myself I’m a lesbian, and I think being here I’ve realised: ‘Oh, I’m not a lesbian, I’m queer.’ And I think that’s really cool.”
She added: "I’m switching letters! I’ve dropped the L and gone to the Q, baby!”
JoJo first came out in 2021, when she posted a selfie wearing a shirt that read: “Best. Gay. Cousin. Ever.”
She later told PEOPLE she never felt pressure to define herself with one label, saying: “I always just say gay or queer because I think the word is cool. Technically, I would say that I am pansexual because that’s how I’ve always been, my human is my human.”
