The news shocked the world and tributes have flooded in for the One Direction star.

Nicole Scherzinger, who knew Liam from the start of his career on the X Factor, shared a tribute to him on Instagram.

"Dear Liam, I will forever cherish and treasure the time we shared together, from fifteen years ago when One Direction was born, right up until just a few weeks ago," she penned.

She continued in her post: "It was such a blessing to get to work with you recently. We shared the same love and passion for music and I will forever remember the meaningful and joyful conversations we had.

"It’s been so hard to process that you’re no longer here, but I am grateful to have known your kind heart, sweet soul and character.

"You brought so much joy, light, and laughter to the lives of those that truly knew you. I will 'miss you' my friend and carry you in my heart. My thoughts and prayers are with your family."

Comments flooded in under the post, and with Naomi Campbell breaking her silence on Payne's tragic passing.

The supermodel, now 54, had a brief relationship with Payne in 2019, which amicably ended after four months, per the Daily Mail.

At the time of their split, sources close to Campbell and Payne had described their relationship as enjoyable but fleeting, with "no hard feelings" between the two.

Under Scherzinger's post, Campbell shared emojis of a broken heart, doves, and hands in prayer.

In a recent update, Andrew Lloyd Webber revealed that Scherzinger was texting Payne on the day he died.

Speaking to Billboard he said: "I suppose something that hasn’t been said, and I suppose I could say, is that of course she mentored Liam, from One Direction. On the Wednesday when he died, she was still texting him that day.”

Despite receiving the heartbreaking news, Scherzinger continued to perform that evening, taking the stage as Norma Desmond in Webber’s Sunset Boulevard on Broadway.

Webber praised Scherzinger’s resilience and dedication, calling her decision to perform “extraordinary.”

“She’d just heard that he died,” Webber added, “and the fact that she even did the show at all is extraordinary. She is an amazing, amazing woman. She is without any question one of the finest performers I’ve ever worked with.”
