Happy Gilmore 2 is officially in the works at Netflix!

The confirmation came during Netflix's upfront presentation to advertisers held in New York on Wednesday afternoon, per Variety.

Adam Sandler, who also co-wrote the original film, played the titular character, Happy Gilmore, a hockey player with a knack for golf and a bad temper.

Directed by Dennis Dugan, the sports comedy remains a standout in Sandler's extensive filmography.

In Happy Gilmore, Sandler's character goes on a journey into the world of professional golf to save his grandmother's house, encountering challenges along the way, including a rivalry with the arrogant pro golfer Shooter McGavin, portrayed by Christopher McDonald.

While details about the sequel remain scarce, including information about the plot, supporting cast, and creative team, the confirmation follows recent speculation sparked by McDonald.

McDonald, known for his portrayal of the antagonist Shooter McGavin, hinted at a sequel during an interview on Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan radio show, cited by News.com.au.

"I saw Adam [Sandler] about two weeks ago, and he says to me, 'McDonald, you're gonna love this,'" he revealed. "He shows me the first draft of 'Happy Gilmore 2.' So, it's in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!"

Alongside Sandler, the original film featured an ensemble cast including Ben Stiller, Julie Bowen, Frances Bay, Kevin Nealon, and the late Carl Weathers, who passed away in February at the age of 76.

While the film gained mixed reviews from critics, its commercial success spoke volumes, grossing over $41.2 million worldwide on a $12 million budget, per News.com.au.

It's not just comedy that Sandler is great at, as in recent times he has dabbled in the odd serious movie too.

Sandler's latest venture, Spaceman, was released on Netflix on March 1, which centered around Jakub (Sandler) grappling with the impending collapse of his marriage while stationed on a solitary research mission at the edge of the solar system.

"Six months into a solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system, an astronaut, Jakub (Sandler), realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth," reads the film's description.

Amidst the isolation of space, Jakub encounters a mysterious creature named Hanuš, voiced by Paul Dano, whose presence prompts Jakub to confront the complexities of his fractured relationship with his wife Lenka, portrayed by Carey Mulligan.

Apart from Sandler's standout performance, Spaceman boasts a talented ensemble cast and a compelling screenplay penned by Colby Day.
