Scott Eastwood has opened up about the devastating loss of his late girlfriend, Jewel Brangman, revealing how her death in a crash involving a defective airbag continues to affect him years later.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Armchair Expert podcast, the actor reflected on the tragedy, explaining that Brangman died in 2014 after what he believes should have been a relatively minor car accident.
"We were together for three or four years," Eastwood said. "They had a recall on the airbag and what would've been a fender bender that probably most people would've survived... she was essentially shot by the airbag."
At the time of the accident, Eastwood was away filming a movie, leaving him unable to immediately return home.
"I was on another film set at the time," he recalled. "And being on a film set when someone passes or something happens, it's really tough."
The 40-year-old explained that it was not the first time he had experienced the loss of someone close while working.
"This had happened before, I had lost Paul Walker on Fury," he said, referring to the actor's death in a 2013 car crash while Eastwood was filming the 2014 war movie.
"He was one of my close friends. When you're on a film set, you don't have time to grieve because the show must go on."
Eastwood, the son of the Hollywood veteran Clint Eastwood and Jacelyn Reeves, said the demands of filming meant he had little choice but to continue working.
"You can't fly home," he said. "You're stuck because you've gotta work."
Instead, he admitted he pushed his emotions aside after receiving the news.
"I got the call actually during a filming day and I think I did a classic defense mechanism of, 'Just punt that to later. Compartmentalize that 'til later,'" he explained. "[It was] brutal having to deal with that and then not being able to go through that."
Looking back, Eastwood believes delaying his grief wasn't the healthiest approach.
"I grieved later," he said. "And that's not a great thing because I think you do want to grieve with the people that are around that you didn't know that were a part of their lives, as well. I think that's an important part of the grieving process."
The actor had previously spoken publicly about Brangman's death during an interview with GQ Australia in 2016.
"I dated a girl a couple of years ago who died in a car accident," he said at the time. "There was a recall on airbags. Her airbag exploded. It shot a projectile through her body. It split her spine, and um ... I've never told anybody that."
He continued: "I've lost friends before; I've lost some great friends. But, I had never lost someone I had been really intimate with, you know, like in that way, in a relationship."
Eastwood also acknowledged that the tragedy changed how he approached relationships.
"I think that really affected me in a way that ... I don't know," he admitted. "Maybe it's made it harder for me to date."

In her first television interview since the tragic death of her boyfriend, Liam Payne, Kate Cassidy appeared on ITV's Lorraine to discuss her ongoing grief and the challenges she faces in accepting his loss.
Payne, the former One Direction star, died at 31 after falling from a balcony in Buenos Aires on October 16, 2024.
During the interview, Cassidy became emotional as she spoke about her difficulty in acknowledging Payne's absence. "I find myself talking about him so much in the present tense," she admitted.
"I don't even feel the need to correct myself because that's part of my healing journey. I'm still working on accepting the fact that he's not here anymore, so it's hard for me to refer to him in the past tense." She added, "When I do refer to him in the past tense, it almost stings that little bit more, because it’s more official. I never would have thought that I’d be talking about him in the past tense so it’s definitely really hard to accept."
Cassidy revealed that some days are particularly challenging, making it difficult for her to get out of bed. However, she emphasized the importance of her support system and daily routines in aiding her healing process.
"I have my better days; I have my harder days," she said. "But I'm surrounded by such a great support system’ which been a huge help as she experienced the ‘first time going through grief and a healing journey."
One significant source of comfort has been her dog, Nala, who encourages her to maintain a routine. ‘But I have this responsibility and this obligation that I am almost in a way … I have no choice. I have to get out of bed (for my dog) Nala and whether it’s a five-minute walk or 20-minute walk first thing in the morning."
In honor of Payne's openness about mental health, Cassidy has become involved in Lorraine's new mental health campaign, March4March. She believes that participating in this initiative allows her to continue the work Payne was passionate about.
Reflecting on their time together, Cassidy described Payne as "one of a kind," noting, "He would light up any room he walked into. His presence was just comforting and warming, and that's something I'll never forget about him."

Kate Cassidy, who had left Argentina just days before the tragic incident, shared her story on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, offering a deeply personal account of her grief, their final moments together, and the signs she believes Liam is still sending her.
Kate, 26, reflected on the day she left Liam in Argentina to fly home to Florida. The couple had a tradition of long, emotional goodbyes—even if it was just for one night. But this time, something felt different.
“I remember sitting there with him and I was going on and on and on about how much I love him and he laughed and interrupted me,” she recalled. “He was like: ‘Kate you’re gonna miss your flight. Your car is in the driveway.’”
Then came the haunting final words: "You're acting like this is the last time you are ever gonna see me again."
Kate laughed at the time, unaware it would be the last time she’d ever hear his voice.
“To look back in time and know that that was the last time I was ever going see him again is just so chilling,” she said.
“I am so blessed that it was that heartfelt goodbye. Our last goodbye—I wouldn't have wanted it to be any differently. I am so glad we had that beautiful time together and I wouldn't change that.”
Kate said she learned about Liam’s death three days later while sitting on the couch at the home they shared in Florida. She received a phone call from one of Liam’s friends asking: “Is Liam okay? I heard he fell from a balcony.”
Assuming it was just a rumor, Kate thought maybe he’d suffered a broken bone. But when no one answered her follow-up calls, panic began to set in. When she called the friend back, the reply shattered her world: “The only update I’ve heard is that Liam’s … dead.”
Even then, Kate said she refused to believe it. “There was just no way, but there was just that one little part of me in the back of my head that was like, why would somebody make this up?”
Then the same friend called again, this time confirming: “Liam’s not here anymore.”
“I still didn’t really believe it,” Kate admitted. “I just kept saying, ‘No, no, no. Are you sure? He probably just … broke a bone. He broke a rib. He broke something.’” But once the reality sank in, she “lost it” and broke down.
Her housekeeper, who had gone home earlier, saw the news and immediately returned to comfort her.
“She put in the garage code, ran in the house and just literally fell on the ground and just hugged me and just said, ‘I am so sorry,’” Kate remembered. “It was just me and her, and she was so comforting and brought me water, brought me tissues.”
In the immediate days after his passing, Kate said she felt no sign of Liam’s presence, and it left her feeling angry and lost.
“I’m such a believer in signs. I believe in manifesting, and I know that he’s with me,” she said. “But for the first five days, I didn’t feel anything.”
She described sitting on the floor of Liam’s closet, sobbing and pleading: “Show me a sign. This is so unfair … I’m so disappointed. I love you so much, but I need you to show me a sign because I don’t feel you.”
Russell Crowe has revealed that his 16-month-old puppy died in his arms earlier this week after it was hit by a truck.
The 58-year-old Les Miserables star shared the devastating news on Twitter on Thursday. Paying tribute to his beloved pup, the star shared a photo of the adorable dog and captioned the post: "This is Louis the Papillion. 16 months old. Tiny, cheeky, brave. He won my heart."
The actor then revealed that - on the second anniversary of my father's death - little Louis was hit by a truck.
"We tried to get him to the vet, but he died in my arms while I was telling him how much we loved him," Crowe added.
Per the Daily Mail, Crowe also spoke about the heartache during an appearance on the Australian radio show The Kyle and Jackie O Show.
When presenter Kyle Sandilands offered Crowe his condolences, he asked the Gladiator star of he was okay at this time.
However, it was evident that Crowe was still incredibly emotional over the loss of Louis, as he could be seen with tears in his eyes. "No, we're actually a little devastated," Crowe replied. "He was such a beautiful little pup you know and kind of wrapped us around him and shaped our lives around him.
"So it's gonna take a little time to get past."
As well as the presenters offering their support, many Twitter users also flooded Crowe's initial tweet with messages of condolence.
Animal group PETA commented: "We are heartbroken for you and so deeply sorry for your loss. Louis will be in your heart forever. Sending all of our love, comfort, and strength."
Daredevil star Vincent D'Onofrio replied: "So sorry to hear this Russel. My heart goes out to you."
"I'm so sorry. What a painful addition to an already painting day for you," one fan wote, adding: "Prayers for you and yours in your pain. I hope you have plenty of good memories to cherish with both of them."
Crowe's father, John Alexander Crowe, passed away in March 2021. At the time, the actor shared a message to fans on Twitter that read: "I arrived back in the bush last night. Today, although the sun is shining and the torrential rain has abated, this date will forever be tinged with sadness.
"My dear old man, my beautiful dad, the most gentle of men, has passed away. Passed away in Coffs Harbour, NSW, his home for the last 25 years. Rest In Peace."
For some people, they may not understand the heartache of losing a dog. However, many pet owners will be able to attest that losing a dog can be like losing a member of the family.
