A 12-year-old girl has been placed in custody at a juvenile facility after fatally stabbing her nine-year-old brother.

As reported by NBC News, a young girl allegedly woke up her parent in their Tulsa, Oklahoma home just before midnight on January 5 after the incident.

According to a press release from the Tulsa Police Department, the alleged suspect claimed that she had stabbed her younger sibling at their residence in the St Thomas Square community.

The outlet shared that after the fatal stabbing, emergency medics from the ambulance service administered CPR on the young boy before he was rushed to a hospital.

The police reported that the nine-year-old was taken into surgery, however, he succumbed to his injuries and was tragically pronounced dead shortly after 2:30 AM on Friday (January 6).

His older sister was taken into custody at the Family Center for Juvenile Justice and remained there at least through Friday, per the police statements.

While Tulsa Police Child Crisis Unit is handling the investigation, the children's identification has not been revealed by authorities.

In addition to this, the girl's motive in the alleged attack has not been disclosed and the allegations revealing her detention are not public knowledge. Furthermore, it wasn't clear if the child has acquired counsel for the case.

Under Oklahoma's law, children of the age of 12 and younger are restricted from being held, however, state rule makes exceptions in cases of incidents where the child may be a threat to the community or themself.

The state law also draws the line at the age of 13 in permitting a child that age or older to be indicted as an adult for felony allegations of murder.

According to Fox23, Captain Meulenberg was asked about the intent of the incident and said: "Intent is going to be a key component that the court system will have to work out. Obviously, we did some interviews, but interviews with a 12-year-old are very preliminary.

"This, unfortunately, has no easy end or easy path, this is going to be a long convoluted process that’s going to be extremely taxing on everyone involved in this," he added.

The publication also shared an anonymous neighbor's reaction to the tragedy, who told the victim's mother: "Just be strong, I know it's easy for someone that it hasn't happened to, to say that, but just be strong, keep your faith, and just don’t give up on your daughter, don’t give up on her at all."

The police department revealed that the stabbing is the city's second homicide of the year, with the first also being a family-related incident.
