London is set to host the world's first-ever Muslim Pride festival.

The event is happening thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign to give a voice to Muslim members of the LGBTIQ+ community, which raised over £10,000 ($12,800 USD). It will take place in the city on April 11 and is organized by the UK's leading Muslim LGBTIQ+ charity Imaan.

Imaan's crowdfunding campaign statement read: "We as LGBTIQ+ Muslims often find ourselves isolated, without community and frequently facing homophobic, biphobic, transphobic AND Islamaphobic abuse.

"The event will build on the incredible events we organized in the past and feature panels, discussions, speakers, arts, culture, and history - a first for LGBTQI Muslims."

Tickets for the event are now available for purchase, and the event's organizers are hoping that social media will help to spread the word.

One of the event's speakers is writer and filmmaker Amrou Al-Kadhi. In a statement cited by Indy100, he said: "The media has tried to control the narrative about Queer Islamic identities for too long, often thrusting us into a horrific culture war, as if Islam is the mortal enemy of queer identity.

"Imaan Fest, Muslim Pride is the perfect counter-narrative, reveling in the joys of queer Muslim identities, and giving us the chance to make our own space."

In response to the announcement, one Twitter user wrote: "Thank you for organizing this. It is beyond ridiculous and insulting how many so-called believers use religion to excuse their hate. Everything they use from the Holy Books against lgbtq+ people is purposely twisted to fit their own personal views. God loves love and diversity."

A second remarked: "This makes me SO happy. I hope visibly queer Muslims are protected at all costs."

However, not everyone was supportive of the groundbreaking social event. A third Twitter user remarked: "O Allah! Protect me and my family from this WRONG DOİNG!"

A fourth wrote: "It's not Muslim pride, because Muslim pride is obeying Allah and actually following his religion with confidence. This is just ppl who decided to love this world more than Allah and they shouldn't be called Muslim for it."
