A man has passed away after selflessly saving his wife's life over his own in an unimaginable tragedy.
On January 28, Todd Town was traveling with his wife Sandra to Jamestown, New York, so they could have dinner with their friends, as reported by News.com.au.
On their way to the dinner, the couple's vehicle collided with another car going in the wrong direction at high speed and with its lights turned off.
The outlet shared that in a split second before the crash, Todd veered the car so that the other driver slammed into his side instead of his wife of almost 40 years - meaning he took the brunt of the crash.
The impact sent the couple's car into a truck and then flying through the air. Devastatingly, both Todd and Sandra were found by paramedics hanging upside down, holding hands.
Sandra's beloved husband passed away, however, his final courageous act ended up saving her life as she is now getting ready to be released to a rehabilitation center after a long battle in the intensive care unit.
Speaking to the publication about his mother's recovery, Joe Town said: "Mum has since been released from the ICU into a step-down room at UPMC Hamot and will (fingers crossed) be released to the rehab center Monday.
"She contracted Covid while in the hospital otherwise she’d already be in the rehab facility. After one to two weeks there, she will be home with us," he continued. "She had a total of 78 staples, all of which were removed.
"Her stomach wound and her back surgery wound have both gone well. Her ankle is the big hurdle now but she’s been fighting through it and making advancements beyond the realm of a normal recovery. She’s incredible," her son added.
The outlet also revealed that Sandra had surgeries for organ damage, the repairment of the top, mid and lumbar parts of her back and spine - including to fuse five vertebrae - and for a tracheal tube.
Following his father’s death, Joe posted a heartbreaking tribute to him on Facebook along with a loving picture of his parent's embracing each other, writing: "Dad is a hero and he died a hero’s death and that’s how he should be remembered."
In the lengthy post, the grieving son recalled the events of that night and his father's heroic act for his wife. He expressed that one of the most valuable lessons his dad taught him was protecting the lives of those he loves, no matter what.
"I will teach my son to be the same man you taught me to be, I promise. I will, if necessary and without hesitation, do the same for my wife. You and your principles will be passed on. This is how you WILL be remembered," Joe lovingly penned.
Our thoughts are with Joe and Sandra and their family at this time.
