An incredibly unfortunate New York City man fell more than a dozen feet into a sinkhole when a pavement caved in, only to be swarmed by rats after his fall.
The unlucky man fell into a sinkhole in the Bronx, New York, while he was waiting for a bus at 3rd Avenue on Saturday.
As per the Daily Mail, Leonard Shoulders, 33, fell when the section of pavement that he was standing on collapsed.
His brother Greg White told the New York Daily News on Monday that after falling between 12 and 15 feet, he sustained a broken arm and leg.
Watch the moment Shoulders falls into the sinkhole below:White said that his brother couldn't scream after falling into the sinkhole because he didn't want to give the rats an opportunity to jump into his mouth.
"He didn't scream, because he didn't want the rats going into his mouth," White said.
"He went down feet first," White said. "He was just standing and the sidewalk just - It was like a suction. Like a sinkhole. He just went down."
The moment the pavement collapsed was captured on CCTV footage.
When the pavement initially collapsed, the 33-year-old did attempt to hang onto its side but eventually fell into the sinkhole.
"He is traumatized," White said. "He said he went straight down. He said he was just falling, falling. But the debris was falling and hitting him in the head."
Shoulders' mother Cindy White added to NBC New York: "It could have been anyone. It could have been anyone it was a whole scary situation. It was my son and thank God he's alive."
Credit: 2515He then had to spend half an hour in the nightmare situation before he was rescued by authorities and taken to the hospital for any required treatment.
A number of businesses in the area around the sinkhole have been forced to close until the situation is resolved and a fence has been erected around the hole to prevent any further accidents.
As per the Independent, the incident is now being investigated by the Department of Buildings (DOB).
