An Australian MMA fighter has been applauded for stepping in to stop a street fight.

Mixed martial artist Viktor Lyall calmly tries to diffuse the tension - then deals decisively with the attackers when they won't be put off.

In a video of the incident that has been widely circulated on social media, two men and a woman can be seen confronting the MMA star on a night out.

Reportedly, the backstory to the altercation was that Lyall first got involved when he came to the aid of another man.

The clip shows the two aggressors - one of whom is shirtless - as they hurl abuse at the fighter and threaten him with a plastic chair. Meanwhile, a woman who appears to be with them shouts: "My dad is a bodybuilder and he will f***ing flatten you."

Despite their aggressive behavior, Lyall remains perfectly calm and focuses on not letting the two men get behind him and surround him.

Eventually, he slaps the shirtless man away and tries to get him to leave. Clearly, the warning jab isn't sufficient as the men continue to circle him, and Lyall is prompted to hit them harder.

At one point, he kicks the shirtless man, completely flooring him. He punches him a few more times when he won't get out of his face. After being knocked to the ground several times, the men eventually leave Lyall alone.

The MMA fighter has been praised for keeping his composure so well during the bust-up, with many people taking to social media to applaud him.

One Instagram account that shared the clip wrote that it was: "The best self defence video I’ve seen in a long time."

"With his experience in MMA and security industry, he keeps constant awareness of not being surrounded and punched from a blind spot," they go on to explain.

Meanwhile, some of Lyall's fans were pro fighters themselves. BKFC star Bec Rodriguez also shared the video, captioning it: "Not all heroes wear capes."

He continued: "These two grubs were bashing a guy in the alleyway, stomping on him when @impalervikki intervened and handed them some street justice!"

Former UFC fighter Suman Mokhtarian also commented, writing: "There’s nothing that makes me happier! I found my new street hero."

And MMA fighter Raquel Canuto chimed in: "This was painful to watch lol I wish the guy in red got more lol and the girl... my gosh."
