In a tragic turn of events, a Belgian soccer player died on the pitch just shortly after saving a penalty.
On Saturday, Arne Espeel, who is the goalkeeper for Winkel Sport B, collapsed on the pitch during a game against Westrozebeke in the second provincial division of West Brabant in Belgium.
According to the Daily Mail, Winkel Sport was 2-1 up before Westrozebeke was awarded a penalty in the second half.
Espeel managed to save the penalty, however, immediately after doing so, he collapsed on the pitch.
Medical professionals did their best to assess the situation and even used a defibrillator to try and revive him, but he was unfortunately pronounced dead shortly after being transported to the nearest hospital.
Following the tragic event, the Belgian soccer club issued a statement, saying: "Winkel Sport is in very deep mourning at the sudden passing of goalkeeper Arne Espeel. We wish Arne's family and friends our heartfelt condolences at this heavy loss.
"Football is taking a back seat for some time."
Stefaan Dewerchin, a Winkel Sport B assistant also said: "The ball was still in play. Our goalkeeper got up as fast as possible to receive the ball, but then he fell.
"It was really terrible to watch. All the players showered together after the incident. When the message came that our goalkeeper was dead, it was an unusually heavy blow.
"I think some players still don't realise exactly what happened," Dewerchin added.
Speaking to Flemish news outlet, Het Nieuwsblad, Patrick Rotsaert, the club's sporting director described the tragedy as "a shock" to everyone.
"It's a tragedy and a shock to us," he said. "Arne had been with the club his whole life, and he was dearly loved. It's a really hard blow."
Upon hearing the news, fans of the goalkeeper took to Twitter to share their thoughts. Many also left tributes for the late athlete.
"This weekend, Arne Espeel (25) had just saved a penalty and then shortly after he collapsed and passed away. He died doing what he loved. Every day can be your last so try to enjoy life while you can," wrote one user while another tweeted: "The New Norm - Arne Espeel, A 25-year-old goalkeeper died suddenly during a football match in West Flanders, Belgium on Saturday evening. According to a local news outlet VRT, the young goalkeeper of Sint-Eloois-Winkel stopped the penalty kick, but he then collapsed."
Some even compared it to Damar Hamlin's cardiac arrest.
"The description of how @arne_espeel died - looks eerily similar to how Hamlin fell. I can’t find video of Espeel’s collapse," one user stated.
An autopsy was conducted earlier this week, however, Espeel's cause of death has yet to be confirmed publicly.
Rest in peace. Our thoughts are with the family during this incredibly difficult time.

A Uruguayan soccer player has tragically passed away aged just 27 after collapsing on the pitch during a game.
Juan Izquierdo collapsed during the second leg of Nacional’s round of 16 tie against São Paulo at Morumbi Stadium in Brazil on August 22, per the Guardian.
It is believed his collapse was caused by an irregular heartbeat and he was immediately transported to the hospital, where he was placed in neurological critical care due to increased intracranial pressure.
Izquierdo had been on a ventilator since Sunday.
The Nacional defender was pronounced dead at 9:38PM local time yesterday, with the hospital confirming the cause as “cardiorespiratory arrest associated with his cardiac arrhythmia.”
Nacional announced Izquierdo's passing in a statement on X (formerly Twitter): “It is with the deepest sorrow and shock in our hearts that the Club Nacional announces the death of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo.
"We express our most sincere condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones. All of Nacional is in mourning for his irreparable loss.”
Alejandro Domínguez, the president of CONMEBOL, also expressed his sympathy, saying: “South American football is in mourning.” São Paulo FC described the day as a “sad day for football.”
Izquierdo collapsed in the 84th minute of the match against São Paulo, after replacing Sebastián Coates at halftime.
The defender fell to the ground without any contact with another player.
Medical staff from both teams rushed onto the pitch, and Izquierdo was taken off the field by ambulance, receiving applause from the fans.
Uruguay's first- and second-division football leagues were postponed last weekend out of concern for Izquierdo's health.
In a show of support, São Paulo players wore shirts honoring the Uruguayan player before their 2-1 victory against Vitória on Sunday.
Izquierdo’s football career began in 2018 with local club Cerro. He joined Peñarol in 2019 but saw limited playing time before moving to Montevideo Wanderers.
In 2022, he was signed by Nacional, where he played one match before being transferred to Liverpool FC in Uruguay.
The defender played a crucial role in Liverpool's campaign, helping them secure their first Uruguayan league title in over a century in 2023.
He returned to Nacional earlier this year, competing for a spot in the starting lineup alongside veteran Coates.
This season, Izquierdo appeared in 23 matches and scored one goal.
Our thoughts are with Izquierdo's fans and loved ones at this time.

US Soccer reporter Grand Wahl sadly died on Friday (December 9) while covering the World Cup in Qatar, and his wife has revealed his cause of death.
Wahl, 48, collapsed at the World Cup in Qatar while covering the Argentina and Netherlands quarter-final game after stating that he felt unwell in the press area, per CNN.
He received immediate treatment on-site before being taken to Hamad General Hospital but sadly died a short time later.
The cause of Wahl's death had not yet been revealed, but his brother had speculated about "foul play" after the journalist wasn't allowed into a stadium for wearing a Pride t-shirt.
His brother Eric Wahl made the claims on social media that his brother had been killed due to his defiance of Qatar's beliefs surrounding homosexuality, but he has since apologized for his statements while talking to the New York Post.
He stated that he made the claims while in a state of shock, and went on to say: "I’m especially sorry to any people in the Muslim world that I offended. It was never my intention."
His wife - Dr. Céline Gounder - has now revealed the cause of Wahl's death. Speaking to CBS News, Gounder revealed that her husband died from an "aortic aneurysm that ruptured."
She told the outlet: "He had an autopsy done here in New York by the New York City medical examiner's office," and this is what revealed the cause of death.
Per the Mayo Clinic, an aortic aneurysm is an enlargement of the aorta, the major blood vessel that supplies blood to the body, which runs from the heart through the center of the chest and abdomen.
As it is the largest blood vessel in the body, a ruptured aortic aneurysm can cause life-threatening bleeding. They can be difficult to detect as aortic aneurysms often grow slowly over time and without noticeable symptoms.
Gounder further explained her husband's untimely death on his Substack page, writing: "Grant died from the rupture of a slowly growing, undetected ascending aortic aneurysm with hemopericardium.
"The chest pressure he experienced shortly before his death may have represented the initial symptoms. No amount of CPR or shocks would have saved him. His death was unrelated to Covid. His death was unrelated to vaccination status. There was nothing nefarious about his death."
Gounder went on to reveal the series of events that took place on the night of her husband's death. She was finishing a work call when she began noticing phone calls and messages from Wahl's colleagues.
"I got off the call and called Gabriel [Wahl's friend who was in Qatar], and he told me he had seen what had happened at the stadium, that Grant had collapsed," she explained as reported by the Daily Mail.
"If he had a pulse when he left the stadium, that would have been a good sign. No one would answer the question. I was scared."
Gounder went to Qatar to identify her husband's body before they both returned home.
Our thoughts are with Dr. Gounder, and all of Wahl's family and friends at this time.

FK Radnicki 1923’s head coach Mladen Zizovic collapsed on the sidelines just 22 minutes into a Serbian SuperLiga clash against Mladost Lucani.
The 44-year-old, only three games into his new role, was rushed to hospital but tragically passed away en route, per BBC News.
Despite medical staff rushing to his aid, confirmation of Zizovic’s death arrived just 20 minutes later, halting the match entirely.
Details surrounding Zizovic’s sudden collapse have since emerged, painting a harrowing picture of his final hours.
Radnicki 1923 player Mehmed Cosic, who was on the pitch at the time, revealed that Zizovic had complained about the lunch served to the team earlier that day.
“They say he complained about the fish, said he wouldn't eat it anymore. That's what he was talking about,” Cosic told Faktor. “There were no problems during the warm-up, the game started, everything was ok.”

Cosic also shared how the scene unfolded in real time: "I'm replaying the movie in my head. He was giving me instructions, turned around and at one point I saw that he was talking to the referee by the benches.
"Then he went towards our bench, turned to the others and said 'I'm not feeling well, I'm not feeling well'.
"He fell, you saw everything else. In the video that appeared on social networks, you can also hear screams."
Even in the face of the unfolding tragedy, the players tried to hold it together.
"We continued the game, hoping that the worst wouldn't happen and that he would be with us again. It was clear that that wasn't it, but we said that we were playing for him and that we wanted to reward him with a victory. We weren't focused, we were in disbelief, but we didn't want to disappoint him.
"We believed that he would come back and be with us again, and that we would celebrate the victory. Then there was complete shock. The referee suddenly stopped the game. Someone said 'he died'. Everything stopped in an instant."

As the tragic news made its way back to the players and staff, footage shared online captured a truly heartbreaking scene. Some players dropped to their knees, others bowed their heads in silence, while several could be seen in tears.
The match, which had initially resumed after the collapse, was abandoned completely before half-time. The emotional impact was immediate and overwhelming.
Cosic revealed that the squad had been granted a week off to mourn, and their next match against Cukaricki has been postponed.
Zizovic’s football journey spanned both player and coach. He represented Bosnia and Herzegovina twice at the international level and played for clubs in his homeland and Albania, per The Sun.
As a coach, his impact stretched across the Balkans, earning admiration wherever he went.
The Football Association of Serbia honored his memory, stating: “Your love for football and the mark you left will remain with us forever.”
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s FA also acknowledged the magnitude of the loss: “Our football community has lost another true football professional.”
Even Serbian giants Red Star Belgrade joined the tributes: “With sadness, we received the news that Radnicki’s coach from Kragujevac, Mladen Zizovic, has suddenly passed away.”
