Stephen Fry is the latest celebrity to call it quits on Twitter after Elon Musk's takeover.

The 65-year-old actor and producer posted a Scrabble snapshot of letters spelling the word "Goodbye," giving his 12.5 million followers an indication that he is leaving the platform.

Instead, he's now directing his attention to Mastodon - which is a self-hosted social networking service where people can create their own personal communities.

Ever since Elon Musk's 44 billion dollar Twitter takeover, a whole host of celebrities have decided to leave the platform.

While most announced the reasons behind their departure, others, like Fry, simply tweeted and left - but it's no coincidence that this occurred around the same time as the self-proclaimed "Chief Twit" announced some major changes for users including the removal of censorship, a fee for verification and a reportedly soon-to-be-introduced paywall.

Not only that but the 51-year-old also laid off a large number of his staff which has resulted in legal action taken against the business.

"We have filed this federal complaint to ensure that Twitter be held accountable to our laws and to prevent Twitter employees from unknowingly signing away their rights," attorney Shannon Liss-Riordan said in a statement to CNN.

And things only got worse as prominent celebrity figures such as Whoopi Goldberg, Toni Braxton, Shona Rhimes, Gigi Hadid, and Ken Olin have announced that they will not be using Twitter anymore and have deactivated their accounts.

"I'm shocked and appalled at some of the 'free speech' I've seen on this platform since its acquisition. Hate speech under the veil of 'free speech' is unacceptable; therefore I am choosing to stay off Twitter as it is no longer a safe space for myself, my sons and other [people of color]," Braxton tweeted.

Supermodel and activist Gigi Hadid also outlined similar reasons as to her decision, stating that the social media app had become a "cesspool of hate and bigotry," adding that "[it's] not a place I want to be a part of."

The platform has reportedly seen a massive spike in users tweeting the N-word, as well as other hateful slurs against minority groups as a way of utilizing the new free speech policy.

According to research, tweets that involved hate speech were 4.7-times higher than usual, averaging approximately 398 an hour with a potential reach of 3 million.
