Christa Pike's last known words before botched execution as she's 'finally awake and speaking'
Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike is conscious and speaking at a hospital near Nashville following an attempt to carry out her death sentence.
Legal representatives for Pike confirmed that she has regained consciousness and has been able to talk while receiving treatment. The update follows an unprecedented event where the inmate survived two complete doses of lethal injection chemicals.
Pike was convicted for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer.
On September 30, prison staff proceeded with the execution protocol despite prior warnings from defense counsel regarding severe difficulties with intravenous access.
After staff struggled for over an hour to properly establish an IV line, the procedure failed to end her life. Pike was subsequently moved to an off-site medical facility for emergency care.
The standard protocol moved forward after the U.S. Supreme Court vacated a temporary stay in a 6-3 decision. Media witnesses present inside the room noted that the curtains to the execution chamber opened at 7:27PM. At that time, Pike was strapped to a gurney with an IV line placed in her arm.
Christa Pike's last words before the lethal doses
Before the injection was administered, Pike delivered her last words to those observing the procedure. She stated: "I just want to say that I'm going to leave this world the way I spent most of my life, and that is with love."
Pike went on to explain that her feelings extended to everyone involved, noting that she loved those who were angry with her just as much as she loved the people on her side. She concluded her final remarks by saying: "I'm at peace, and I'm ready to go."
Following her statement, Pike sang 'I Love You So Much' while a male spiritual advisor stood near the gurney and patted her head. Soon after the protocol commenced, the room grew tense as physical complications became apparent to witnesses present. Pike voiced distress over the physical sensation in her limb, saying: "My arm feels like it's about to burst open."
Christa Pike's current state
Witnesses reported that Pike continued breathing, moving, and making heavy snoring sounds for over an hour as prison officials repeatedly opened and closed the curtains.
Eventually, officials halted the process and transported Pike to a local hospital, where medical teams worked to stabilize her and flush the toxic substances from her body.
Her attorneys released a statement regarding her current status: "Against all odds, Christa Pike is conscious, speaking, and continues to receive critical medical care."
They noted that her recovery is medically unprecedented and that her prognosis remains unclear, expecting a long recovery ahead. Her defense team also highlighted that despite severe damage to her arms, she remains handcuffed and shackled to her bed.
Call for sentence commutation
Attorneys for Pike expressed gratitude to the first responders and hospital staff who provided medical care to her following the incident. They also thanked people around the world who sent messages offering support and prayers during the ordeal.
Her legal team emphasized that Pike is the only person known to have survived a complete execution attempt in the United States. Pointing out that she endured two full rounds of lethal injection drugs, her representatives are requesting that the Governor of Tennessee commute her sentence to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
