Where Christa Pike is now - 4 days after her botched execution left her with excruciating injuries
Authorities have revealed where Christa Pike is, following two unsuccessful attempts to administer her with the lethal injection.
Public speculation over the death row inmate's health has raged on, with many wondering whether the 50-year-old had suffered irreversible neurological damage after her botched execution.
Pike, who was to become the first woman in over 200 years to be executed in Tennessee, was thrown behind bars for the murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in 1995.
Just days after the failed execution, experts have suggested that she may not be executed due to her poor health.
What we know is that nothing will happen this year, as Tennessee Governor Bill Lee ordered a pause on all state executions for the remainder of 2026, after Pike became the second inmate to survive a lethal injection dose this year.
Shortly after the failed attempts, a spokesperson for the Tennessee Department of Corrections confirmed she was 'transported to an off-site medical facility'.
Where is Christa Pike now?
Pike's lawyers revealed on Friday (October 2) that she is unconscious and on a ventilator in hospital, where she is being treated.
It was reported by Sky that hospital staff were working to save her life by clearing the lethal injection drug pentobarbital from her system.
A court filing revealed that the inmate's attorneys weren't happy with the problems caused by IV lines, which led to the drug going into her body instead of her bloodstream.
As a result, medical professionals have been tending to the significant injuries sustained to her arms.
At the time, Pike asked after the first dose: “My arm feels like it is about to burst open.
“Does this happen like that?”
The execution team had struggled to establish an IV line for over an hour during the execution.
Her legal team has asked a judge to instruct the Tennessee Department of Correction to preserve all evidence related to the attempt.
They wrote in the filing: "Apparently at no point did any member of the execution team realise that the IV lines were not correctly placed or that the veins had blown and that the pentobarbital was, in whole or in part, entering Ms Pike's body."
The legal experts detailed that her arms were 'swollen, burned and blistered' when she arrived at a hospital.
They claimed that instead of 'remedying this failure', they prepared and administered another dose of pentobarbital from a syringe.
Pike's defence lawyer, Randy Spivey, claimed there were at least seven needles in her left arm.
Witnesses heard the death row inmate snoring when the execution chamber's microphone was cut off, over an hour into the execution attempt.
Tennessee's prisons chief resigns
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced on Saturday (October 3) that the head of Tennessee’s prison system is resigning, following the failed execution of Christa Pike.
According to Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada, stepping aside 'is in the best interests' of the state, as per CNN.
The decision comes as an independent review is carried out to find out why Pike's execution failed.
