Donald Trump has found himself at the center of fresh online discussion after a series of comments about his youngest son, Barron Trump, resurfaced following Father’s Day.
The remarks were originally made last month during an East Room ceremony honoring military mothers and their families. While speaking at the event, the US President praised First Lady Melania Trump and highlighted her role both in public life and at home.
Turning his attention to their son, Barron, Trump made a light-hearted reference to the 20-year-old’s height before once again focusing on Melania’s parenting, prompting mixed reactions across social media.
During the ceremony, Trump told attendees: “Most importantly, and most importantly to her, she's done an incredible job as First Lady. She's an incredible mom.”
He then referenced Barron, who is the youngest of his five children, saying: “She has a little boy who's quite tall. He's a little boy to us, but he's quite tall, right?”
The president appeared to be joking about his son's towering stature.
Continuing his praise of the First Lady, Trump added: “And his great parent. She takes great care of him, thank you.”
The comments quickly drew attention online, with some critics suggesting the wording created an unusual distance between Trump and his son.
One X user wrote: “Yes, the distancing is quite strange. Imagine how his son must feel, hearing this.”
Another joked: “Nothing screams proud dad on Father’s Day like can’t recall your son’s name.”
A third commented: “I still can’t believe y'all elected this thing.”
Others pushed back against the criticism and argued that Trump was clearly making a joke.
“Y’all got TDS ['Trump Derangement Syndrome']; he is obviously describing his son,” one supporter wrote.
Another added: “He’s literally making a joke. You’ve got to be kidding.”
A third defended the president by saying: “Maybe he’s just giving credit where credit is due. If he took credit, you’d have a problem with that too!”
The exchange is not the first time Trump has emphasized Melania’s influence while discussing their son.
At a Congressional Ball in December, after the First Lady introduced her 2026 legislative initiative, Trump praised her relationship with Barron in front of guests.
“She loves children. She's got a wonderful boy. And she's very proud of her boy,” he said.
Barron is the only child shared by Donald and Melania Trump. Trump also has four older children from previous relationships: Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump, and Eric Trump with his first wife, Ivana Trump, and Tiffany Trump with his second wife, Marla Maples.
