It's July, which in American terms, means it's time to party. Every year, when the summer rolls into town and July fourth comes back around, America loses its mind. Of course, we all know why: July fourth marks Independence Day.

It marks the day that Will Smith and a few other lesser-known actors flew fighter jets into space to defend the planet from an alien invasion. It marks the day when we all realised that, in order to save the human race, all we needed to do was send the aliens a computer virus. It marks the day when President Thomas Whitemore delivered this rousing speech:

“Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind.

"'Mankind.' That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can’t be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests.

"Perhaps it’s fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom… Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution… but from annihilation.

"We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on! We’re going to survive!

"Today we celebrate our Independence Day!”

And so, since 1996, America has continued to celebrate July 4th in extreme fash- wait... sorry, that was the film, wasn't it?

Of course, the real Independence Day refers to America freeing themselves from the British Empire and a life of teacups, fish and chips and misery.

Across America tomorrow, people will be hosting BBQ's, enjoying fireworks and celebrating this day of American freedom by wearing the flag of Panama. Don't believe me, check this out.

Twitter user Dale Cheesman's grandma has been wearing the same shirt on the Fourth of July for the last 25 years. At first glance, it looks all good. It's red, white and blue; it has stars; it's got stripes. But, after watching the World Cup, Dale quickly realised that his grandma was wearing the flag of Panama.

"My grandma has worn the same shirt with red, white, blue, and stars to celebrate the 4th of July for more than 25 years. Every year, she wears the exact same shirt. Thanks to the #WorldCup we finally noticed it's the Panama Flag. Over 25 years of treason."

The tweet went viral, with the majority of people finding the image both hilarious and adorable.

And, it also gained traction in Panama, with Dale's grandma getting plenty of invites to visit the country.

Ah, old people. Never change.
