President Joe Biden admitted during a CNN town hall to feeling "self-conscious" when 'Hail to the Chief' was first played for him.

During the town hall, the 78-year-old Democrat answered questions about certain ongoing issues in the US such as the hesitancy over the Covid vaccine, concerns about the economy, and voting rights.

Biden also took the opportunity to acknowledge that despite being a world leader, he, too, gets self-conscious from time to time.

During the program, Biden spoke about the novelty of hearing 'Hail to the Chief' as he walks into certain events. He said he still cannot fathom the fact that the song is saluting him of all people.

"The first time I walked downstairs and they played 'Hail to the Chief,' I went, 'Where is he?'" he joked in reference to his time serving as vice president during Barack Obama's time in office. "It's a great tune but you feel a little self-conscious."

Biden continued: "You think I'm kidding. I'm not ... You feel a little self-conscious."

He went on to say, however: "I am not at all self-conscious about the power that goes with the office as it relates to resolving issues."

Elsewhere during the event, Biden opened up about missing the prior freedom he had to do mundane things such as eating breakfast in a bathrobe in the morning.

The president said: "Secret Service is wonderful and because things are so crazy out there, it is very hard to get comfortable like I would ordinarily be.

"For example, I think all of the help that's there, providing meals and all the rest, I think they love us. Because I say, 'Don't come in for breakfast. We can get our own breakfast.' Because I like to walk out in my robe and go in."

This comes months after Biden's last CNN town hall in February, which saw the new president compare living in the White House to being in a "gilded cage".

He told Anderson Cooper at the time that he was not accustomed to being waited on by such a large staff.

"I get up in the morning and look at Jill and say, 'Where the hell are we?'" Biden said, adding that he feels "extremely self-conscious" when people wait on him.
