A man who killed five at a Maryland newspaper has been sentenced to life behind bars.
Jarrod Ramos, 41, fatally shot and killed five people at the Capital Gazette newspaper in 2018, and in 2019, he pled guilty to the 23 pleas against him, but not guilty to being criminally responsible, NBC News reports.
This is the equivalent of an insanity plea in the state of Maryland.
The sentencing took place on Tuesday, September 28, and Anne Arundel County Circuit Court Judge Michael Wachs said he was shocked by Ramos' lack of remorse for the attack.
"The impact of this case is just simply immense," Wachs said, per NBC Washington. "To say that the defendant exhibited a callous and complete disregard for the sanctity of human life is simply a huge understatement."

He declined to address the court at his sentencing hearing.
The victims of the atrocity were Rob Hiaasen, 59, deputy editor; Gerald Fischman, 61, editorial page editor; sports reporter and editor John McNamara, 56; Wendi Winters, 65, a reporter; and Rebecca Smith, 34, a sales assistant.
"For the victims' families and survivors, this day was a long time coming and closes what I hope will be the final legal chapter on a case that impacted the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County community and beyond," Anne Arundel County State's Attorney Anne Colt Leitess said in a statement.
"But, I know the healing for all will continue and many will struggle to move forward."
Ramos targetted the newspaper after it reported a criminal harassment case that involved him, and he entered its offices with a pump-action shotgun in what was described as an act of revenge.
Montana Winters Geimer, Winters' daughter, said that she went through hell before discovering that her mother had lost her life in the attack.
"The day she died was the worst day of my life," Geimer said. "The hours spent not knowing if she was alive or dead have lived in my nightmares ever since."
