Here's what will happen to Melania Trump if Donald Trump passes away while in office.
In 2024, the 80-year-old president was the target of a failed assassination attempt, and in the following two years, he has been seen displaying troubling signs of physical distress, such as bruised hands and swollen legs.
And now, social media is flooded with "Trump is dead" posts after it was announced that Vice President JD Vance will host the first White House press briefing since July on Thursday.
This has left some wondering what would happen if Trump died while in office and what it would mean for Melania.
One of the biggest changes would be the end of Melania's status as First Lady.
Under the U.S. Constitution's 25th Amendment, the vice president would assume the presidency following the death of a sitting president.
In this hypothetical scenario, Vice President J.D. Vance would become the 48th president of the United States.
Once Trump's death was confirmed, Vance would take the presidential oath of office, while his wife, Usha Vance, would become First Lady.
The transition is designed to prevent a gap in presidential leadership. It would also mean Melania no longer had an official role in the White House, since her position as First Lady is tied to her husband's presidency.
The death of a sitting president would also begin a period of national mourning.
Congress defines a state funeral as "a national tribute which is traditionally reserved for a head of state".
As Trump's wife, Melania would likely be consulted on funeral details, including whom she would want to attend.
The 56-year-old would be expected to participate in the major funeral observances, potentially including the transfer of Trump's remains, a lying in state at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, and the funeral itself.
She would sit alongside Trump's immediate family during the service and would also be expected to attend his burial.
Where Trump would be buried is unclear.
Melania would also be entitled to survivor benefits following her husband's death.
Under the Former Presidents Act, the spouse of a deceased president can receive a lifetime annual pension of about $20,000. It is up to her whether she wants to accept the benefits.
National Taxpayers Union Foundation reported that widowed first ladies can also be offered other benefits, including office space and staffing allowances, health benefits, and up to $500,000 annually for official travel.
Under the terms of the Former Presidents Act, the pension would also end if she remarried before turning 60.
Elite Daily reports that Lady Bird Johnson was the last First Lady to receive such benefits when her husband died in 1973. She never remarried and died in 2007 at 94.
In addition to this, the former model would also have the option of continuing to receive Secret Service protection.
The agency protects presidents, vice presidents, presidents-elect, and vice presidents-elect, as well as their immediate families.
Melania would also have to move out of the White House so the new president and his family could move in.
She would likely be given time to make the transition rather than being expected to leave immediately.
Melania could return to Mar-a-Lago or New York City, where she previously lived at Trump Tower, or she could also choose somewhere else entirely.
Trump's death would have no impact on Melania's US citizenship.
The first lady, who was born in Slovenia, moved to the US in 1996 and received her green card in 2001. She became a naturalized US citizen in 2006.
Speaking about the immigration process in 2023, Melania said: "My personal experience of traversing the challenges of the immigration process opened my eyes to the harsh realities people face, including you, who try to become U.S. citizens," per CBS News.
"And then, of course, there are nuances of understanding the United States immigration laws and the complex legal language," she added.
After leaving the White House, Melania would be free to decide how involved she wanted to remain in public life.
She could continue supporting causes, write another memoir, or become a symbolic political figure.
She could also leave politics entirely and rely on her own financial resources along with any federal benefits.
The New York State Attorney General's Office has said Trump has a revocable living trust and that he "transferred a significant portion of his assets and liabilities, including certain entities that he owned, to the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust dated April 7, 2014."
The exact terms of that trust are not public.
Celebrity Net Worth estimates Melania's own net worth at $50 million. Her income has included a jewelry line and a book deal, while she reportedly received around $40 million for the documentary Melania, released in January 2026.
