A young wheelchair user with cerebral palsy has saved his family from a potentially lethal gas leak after crawling to his parent's bedroom to warn them of the danger.

Last month, seven-year-old Michael Martinez was woken by a loud beeping sound ringing through in his family's home in Aledo, Texas, Fox News reports.

However, after realizing that he was the only person in the house to hear the beeping, Michael decided to take action.

The youngster - who regularly uses a wheelchair due to his cerebral palsy - opted to crawl to his parents' bedroom in order to wake his mother, Angie Martinez.

As well as his parents, Michael's three cousins and aunt were also in the property.

Watch Michael speak out about his heroic actions in the video below:

Angie said she initially thought the beeping was just the smoke alarm alerting the family that its battery was low, but she and her husband soon realized that the noise was coming from their carbon monoxide alarm.

After quickly googling what four beeps from the alarm meant, she was terrified to learn that her home had hit a "critical level" of the deadly gas.

The mom also phoned a helpline, which instructed her to immediately open all of the windows in the home.

Angie then woke the rest of her family, and they rushed outside - before even having time to put on socks and shoes.

The family has since spoken out about how young Michael saved their lives.

Speaking to Fox News, Angie said she was feeling "very sick and nauseous" by the time she got outside, and revealed that Michael's aunt was also experiencing chest pains.

Praising their son's heroic actions, Angie added: "We told him that he is our hero. If it wasn’t for him, we probably never would have woken up."

The mom added: "Many people look at people with disabilities like they are not able to do much, but Michael showed everyone just how untrue that is."

The family subsequently discovered that the poisonous gas had started to build up in their home after one of their stove burners was accidentally left on.

Per the official NHS website, carbon monoxide does not have a scent or taste, and can starve the body of oxygen if inhaled in large quantities.

After word spread about the youngster's heroism, a GoFundMe was launched in an effort to buy Michael a brand new wheelchair.

The fundraiser is currently on $22,000 as of this writing, and has a target set at $25,000. You can donate HERE.

The GoFundMe, started by Michael's aunt, also states: "Michael will be undergoing future surgeries and therapies to help him be able to walk. That is his desire of his heart is to one day walk.

"Let's help out this hero and please donate whatever God has put in your heart to give this hero."

Well done, Michael! You're a true hero!
