Tom Hanks has paid tribute to Adam Schlesinger, the Fountains of Wayne singer who passed away from coronavirus, aged 52.

Hanks, who also tested positive for COVID-19 several weeks ago, worked with the bass player back in 1996 when his song was picked as the title track for That Thing You Do!, which Hanks directed.

Schlesinger, who co-wrote Fountains of Wayne’s most famous song Stacy’s Mom, provided backup vocals for the track.

That Thing You Do! is the song sung by fictional 1960s band The Wonders, in the film. It went onto be nominated for Best Original Song but lost out to Madonna’s You Must Love Me from Evita.

"There would be no Playtone without Adam Schlesinger, without his That Thing You Do! He was a One-der. Lost him to Covid-19. Terribly sad today. Hanx," the actor wrote on Twitter following news of his passing.

Chris Carrabba, from Dashboard Confessional, confirmed Schlesinger's death. "I am grasping for the right words," he wrote on Twitter. "My dear friend Adam Schlesinger has passed away from COVID-19."

"I knew him best as a mentor, and a friend. We must take this seriously. People are sick and dying. It is hard to stay locked indoors but lives will be saved. Take care of each other. Rest In Peace, my dear friend.”

The Forrest Gump star was one of the first celebrities to reveal that they had contracted COVID-19, along with his wife, Rita Wilson.

Hanks announced that he had the illness on social media, writing:  "Hello, folks. @ritawilson and I are down here in Australia. We felt a bit tired, like we had colds, and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too. To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the Coronavirus, and were found to be positive."

In the video below, Tom and Rita's son, Chet, opens up about his parents' "crazy" diagnoses:

''Well, now. What to do next? The Medical Officials have protocols that must be followed. We Hankses will be tested, observed, and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires. Not much more to it than a one-day-at-a-time approach, no? We'll keep the world posted and updated. Take care of yourselves! Hanx!"
