A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department said they received a call for medical aid around 3:38PM local time.
When first responders arrived, both bodies were still inside the home - more than six hours later, according to Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton.
Hamilton also told reporters that police have not released any information about the injuries the victims sustained or whether a weapon was found.
The exact cause of death will be determined by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
Son Nick Reiner Being Questioned By Police
While no arrests have been made and police have yet to name any suspect, multiple sources close to the family have alleged that the couple’s 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, may have been involved.
PEOPLE reports that Nick is currently alive and being questioned by law enforcement.
The family issued a brief but emotional statement following the devastating discovery: “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time."
The tragic incident has left the Reiner family shattered. The filmmaker was the father of four children. He adopted his eldest daughter, Tracy, during his first marriage to actress and director Penny Marshall.
Tracy, who has appeared in A League of Their Own, Die Hard, and Apollo 13, reacted with disbelief and revealed that she had just seen her father the day before for a family gathering.
“I came from the greatest family ever,” she told NBC News. “I don’t know what to say. I’m in shock.”
City And Industry Pay Tribute To A Hollywood Icon
Rob and Michele had three children together - sons Jake and Nick, and daughter Romy. Their love story began on the set of When Harry Met Sally, where Michele's presence reportedly changed the film's ending.
The two married in 1989 and later collaborated on projects including Shock and Awe and Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, which was released earlier this year.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass issued a heartfelt statement in the wake of the tragedy, calling it “a devastating loss for our city and our country".
“Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice,” she said.
“An acclaimed actor, director, producer, writer, and engaged political activist, he always used his gifts in service of others. Personally, I am heartbroken by the tragic loss of Rob and his wife Michele.”
She added: “I want to thank all of the first responders who were called to this tragic event. The investigation is ongoing. I’m holding all who loved Rob and Michele in my heart.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom also spoke out, calling Reiner a “big-hearted genius behind so many of the classic stories we love," cited by BBC News.

Friends and co-stars Christopher Guest and Jamie Lee Curtis said they were “numb, sad, and shocked” by the “violent, tragic deaths” of their friends.
“Our ONLY focus and care right now is for their children and immediate families, and we will offer all support possible to help them,” they penned, per Variety.
“There will be plenty of time later to discuss the creative lives we shared and the great political and social impact they both had on the entertainment industry, early childhood development, the fight for gay marriage, and their global care for a world in crisis. We have lost great friends. Please give us time to grieve,” they concluded.
