Utah State University football player Andre Seldon Jr. dies aged 22 after freak 'cliff-diving accident'

Tributes are pouring in for Utah State University football player Andre Seldon Jr., who has sadly passed away at the age of 22.

As reported by PEOPLE, a press release shared by the Cache County Sheriff's Office in Logan confirmed that deputies were called to the Porcupine Reservoir at approximately 2:20PM on Saturday (July 20) following reports of a "possible drowning".

At 9:05PM, the body of Seldon Jr. was found by the Utah Department of Public Safety dive team.

It is believed that the football prodigy had been "cliff-diving", according to a message from Lieutenant Tim Ramirez.


"Initial information indicates that a young adult male was seen diving from cliffs into the water and did not resurface," Ramirez's message read.

A follow-up from the Sheriff's Office added: "Our initial investigation leads us to believe this is a tragic accident as multiple witnesses recount the same information [...] Our heartfelt [condolences] go to family and friends of the student-athlete."

Following the heartbreaking news, the Utah State University has shared a tribute on its official athletics website, writing: "The Utah State University community is mourning the death of football student-athlete Andre Seldon Jr."

A statement from interim head coach Nate Dreiling read: "Our football program is heartbroken to have to endure the loss of one of our own.

"Having had a previous relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you he was an incredible person and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre's family as we grieve with them over this tremendous loss."

Vice President and Director of Athletics Diana Sabau added: "We extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and all who loved Andre."

Seldon, who joined the Utah State football program this summer, was poised to start classes for the fall semester. His football journey includes two recent seasons at New Mexico State University, where he played under USU Interim Head Coach Nate Dreiling. Prior to his time at New Mexico State, Seldon spent two seasons at Michigan.

Seldon began his football career at Belleville High School in Belleville, Michigan, where he first showcased his talent on the field.

The university has announced that it will be providing emotional support for students and facility following the tragic news.
