White House crisis as Katie Zacharia social media post 'reveals sensitive information' amid her firing after five days in role
Katie Zacharia sparked White House controversy after sharing a post containing "sensitive information" following her firing.
The 42-year-old left her post as the press secretary, just five days after her shaky public debut on October 13.
She opened the 15-minute briefing by telling reporters she was "so honored" to be working for President Trump and noted that she’d "wanted to work for him for a very long time".
She then spent the next six minutes reading from prepared comments praising the 80-year-old and taking questions from a list of outlets.
At one point, a member of the press asked her how she planned to balance her new duties in Washington, D.C., while her husband and children stayed at home in California, and she ended up confusing her husband with President Trump.
"This idea of not spending evenings with my kids is completely unacceptable, so my president... uh excuse me, my husband is out here," she said. However, she seemed to recover quickly enough and even make light of the moment, quipping: "That's a good one."
Zacharia's five-day tenure ends after rocky debut
Zacharia spent the next few days after her chaotic press briefing addressing the criticism and defending her qualifications.
Trump hinted at her impending exit on Friday (October 16) afternoon during an impromptu news conference in front of the Marine One helicopter.
He told reporters that he’d discussed whether Zacharia wanted to remain under such a tough media microscope.
"I said to Katie just two minutes ago, I said, Katie, you know, you don't have to do this... the news has been so nasty to her. I've never seen anything like it. And I said, I said to her honestly, if I were you, I'd reconsider," he said.
"You think about it, but I wouldn't reconsider. She's got a beautiful husband and family ... maybe it's not for her," he added.
Hours later, officials announced that Zacharia had departed from the White House.
"President Trump is a kind, wonderful, gracious, thoughtful, enthusiastic, and hardworking man. I wish more Americans appreciated him. No one will ever make America great the way he has and continues to," she wrote on X the next day. "It was an honor to work for him."
Her short tenure sets a new record for the shortest time served in the role by a White House press secretary or communications director.
That previous record was held by Anthony Scaramucci, whom Trump hired as communications director in July 2017, only to fire him 11 days later after he badmouthed other senior White House aides in an interview with a New Yorker reporter.
Eagle-eyed viewers spot suspicious detail in farewell photos
Zacharia's farewell posts sparked controversy when she shared a photo of herself standing next to Trump in the Oval Office.
Online users quickly noticed what appeared to be a deliberately blurred map sitting on the Resolute Desk.
A second photo featuring the former press secretary and her family also triggered outrage as it looked like it had been digitally altered to remove the map entirely, and signs of editing were also visible on a White House guidebook lying beneath the image.
Some people speculated that the map depicted East Potomac Park, where Trump is pursuing a golf course redevelopment.
Trump announces golf course renovation amid legal battle
On Sunday (October 18), Trump announced plans to transform East Potomac Golf Links into a championship-level course, with renovations beginning November 15 and expected to last 15 months.
The project faces legal challenges from the DC Preservation League and others, while US District Judge Ana Reyes previously stopped further tree removal after hundreds were cut down.
The White House maintains that the removals were unrelated to the redevelopment.
"When completed, it will be open to the Public while, at the same time, designed to the Highest Level of Golf and able to hold World Class Tournaments such as the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship, the Ryder Cup, and the Presidents Cup," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Trump also shared a proposed design resembling the blurred image in Zacharia's photo, per The Sun.
Save East Po, which is against the renovation plan, slammed the White House and hit out at the doctored images.
"Nothing says 'we have no plan' like a photo of a plan-shaped map on the President’s desk, followed by a second photo where that map has been digitally removed," the group wrote on X.
However, Zacharia and White House officials responded to the claims, with the political commentator telling the Daily Mail, "a very sweet picture [has been turned] into something controversial".
