A woman from Utah has made headlines after revealing she will be carrying her son and daughter-in-law's baby - at the age of 56.
Nancy Hauck made the decision to act as the surrogate for her 32-year-old son, Jeff, and his wife, Cambria, who is 30. Unfortunately, the couple have been unable to fall pregnant on their own - given that Cambria had to previously undergo a hysterectomy, the Daily Mail reported.
Naturally, the couple was forced to consider other avenues - in fact, they tried IVF for six years, eventually falling pregnant with twins, who are now aged three. The pair had another set of twins, who are almost 12 months, but complications during their birth - due to a condition called placenta accreta - led to Cambria being forced to have her uterus removed, per People.
Cambria told TODAY that this had been a challenging choice to make, saying: "We ended up not wanting to play with my life. Because they didn't know [where the blood was coming from] and they couldn't stop the bleed [...] We were really sad, but we just trusted in the Lord's plan for us and so we went forward with it."
When the pair decided they wanted to add to their brood, Jeff's mom offered to act as surrogate. Though, she didn't realize it could even be a possibility, due to her age.
Hauck told TODAY that she'd had five "successful pregnancies," but that this was over 20 years ago. "I could just feel this calling to offer to carry for them. I knew I was too old. I knew it wasn't going to be possible, even though that's exactly what's happened. I just felt I needed to tell them I would be willing to do it," she stated.
Her daughter-in-law was ecstatic and at peace with the offer, revealing: "We knew that the only way that we could use our embryos was through having someone carry for us. So when Nancy came to us, I know most people would probably be like, 'Oh my gosh, that's crazy,' but it didn't feel like that. There was just so much peace around the whole conversation and around the whole experience."
The baby, who the couple has since revealed will be named Hannah, is due in November this year.
