A mysterious assortment of cars appeared at a US airport, a mystery that baffled the workers there.
The relatively small Springfield-Branson National Airport doesn't have a large parking lot, instead its in proportion to the few flights that actually leave.
Yet one day, airport officials were stunned to find 25 cars had been left there, seemingly abandoned.
But the mystery as the why the cars were there - and who they belonged to - only deepened when authorities tried to locate the owners.
There was seemingly no rhyme or reason why the 25 cars were abandoned in the car park of the Missouri airport.
In fact, officials only became aware of the abandoned vehicles after they decided to re-paint the lines of the long-term stay car park, so they had no idea how long they'd been left there for.
Then, the work started to try and locate the owners of the missing cars, with police using their license plates and tags to track them.
That's when the most bizarre finding in the mystery reared its head.
After the discovery of the mystery cars, the authorities then set to work trying to trace them back to their owners through their license plates and tags.
But one discovery made the mystery even more confusing than it was before.
Kent Boyd, Public Information and Marketing Manager for the airport, revealed that the authorities did manage to track down one of the owners of the vehicles - but they had sadly passed away.
"We were able to trace [the plates back]," Boyd explained. "And we found an obituary for the registered owner."
Boyd went on to explain that the deceased owner's family were made aware that the car was still at the airport, but there's been no movement since then.
"We contacted the estate and asked if they can please come get this car," he said. "They still haven’t."
In fact, through fact-finding, it was discovered that most of the abandoned cars had been stuck in the airport for three years, with no-one realizing or noticing until now.
Boyd is sure that the cars will be moved from the location, but the authorities are in no hurry to have them towed away just yet.
"I don’t know what that timeline is," he admitted. "You don’t want to tow them or get them off the property too early because you know sure as heck as soon as you do that, somebody will show up looking for it."

Social media users have been left in disbelief after learning that there are two graves located in the middle of a busy airport runway.
Now, nobody likes being stuck on the runway when traveling. But at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport in Georgia, two people have found themself permanently on the runway.
However, they're not travelers - in fact, they weren't even alive when the airplane was invented.
No, this is because the two individuals have found themselves lying in eternal rest with their graves directly in the runway.
Yep, you read that right. In a plot twist that feels straight out of a mystery novel, two tombs are literally part of the tarmac. So how did this eerie scenario come to be?
Back in the 1800s, the land where the airport now sits was owned by a local farming family— the Dotsons.
As detailed on the airport's official website, when Richard and Catherine Dotson passed away, they were buried in their family plot. Fast forward to the 20th century, and the city wanted to build an airport, which meant paving over the Dotson family farm.
With World War II going on, the nation required additional facilities. Therefore, in 1942, the federal government and the City of Savannah for 1,100 acres - and what is now the Savannah/Hilton Head International airport was built.

The Dotsons' descendants agreed to let the airport use the land, but with one very specific request: the graves of Richard and Catherine should never be disturbed.
The family's great-grandchildren negotiated with the federal government and all but four of their ancestors were relocated to Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, the airport states.
Two other family members, Daniel Hueston and John Dotson, also remained in place - but their graves are located next to the 9,350-foot runway - where thousands of general and commercial aviation operations take place every year.
And thus, their final resting places remain embedded in the airport’s tarmac to this day - with the airport being the only one in the world to have graves proudly and prominently built into the runway.
Amazingly, It is believed that the familial cemetery actually contained more than 100 graves.
After seeing a post on X detailing the amazing fact, social media users were left in disbelief, with one person writing: "Too bad they couldn’t preserve the land but at least they’re still respected."
A second added: "I had no idea and I’ve been in and out of this airport many times."
So, the next time you’re flying in or out of Savannah, you might just be rolling over a piece of history - literally!

We all misplace things from time to time... it's easy to lose your keys or your wallet, but have you ever lost a plane?
In case you're reading this and realize that you haven't seen your Boeing 737 in a while, you might want to head over to Bali to pick it up.
Perhaps in a similar type of situation to when you park your car and completely forget where you left it, it seems that this has happened to a plane.
The mysterious Boeing 737 sits in a field in Southern Bali near a limestone quarry, and nobody has a clue about how it got there.
As documented on Atlas Obscura, the plane is situated off the Raya Nusa Dua Selatan Highway which is near the popular Pandawa beach, which means that it isn't hidden away from the world.
This makes it even stranger that nobody knows how the plane came to be where it is, considering it's surrounded by busy roads and popular destinations. Someone must have seen the passenger plane arrive, right?
The author of the Atlas Obscura page, Tony Dunnell, offered advice to those who want to see it: "The view of the plane is obstructed from the highway, so you need to keep your eyes open, or you could easily miss it. When you come across a wall of sea containers on the side of the road, you have arrived."
From there, you have to climb onto the containers that surround the aircraft to get a good glimpse of it. The plane is on private property, so a small fee is needed.
Theories among the locals claim that the plane, which has no obvious livery to tie it to a particular airline, may have been bought to the area with the intention of converting it into a restaurant.
As the story goes, it was bought in and assembled in the field which explains why nobody saw it arrive, but the owner ran out of money so left it to rust in the area.
Apart from this one theory, nobody actually knows the true origin of the aircraft, so your guess is as good as mine.
Weirdly this isn't the only abandoned Boeing 737 in the area, as just five miles north there sits another, right next to Dunkin' Donuts, because where else would you find a plane?

The mystery behind a pink McLaren car, which was pictured as "abandoned" outside a London hotel for several years, has finally been solved.
For over five years, a striking pink McLaren 570S has been a fixture outside the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel in London, drawing curious glances and sparking widespread speculation.
Many believed the supercar, which is worth over $201K, had been abandoned and left untouched.
However, the mystery has now been solved, and it turns out that the McLaren was never truly left behind; it was simply parked for an extended period by its owner, a resident of the hotel.
Reports about the car first emerged during the pandemic when locals noticed it parked outside the hotel for weeks, then months, with no apparent movement.
Despite the prolonged stay, the car’s condition remained impeccable. The tires were always inflated, it was consistently clean, and on occasion, the car even received new modifications.
The most curious aspect, however, was that the McLaren’s license plate was once changed, leading many to speculate about its ownership and purpose.
The mystery took another turn when the car was spotted driving down the highway for the first time earlier this month. A short video shared on Instagram by Great Londoner Meme showed the vehicle in motion, and to many, it felt surreal.
As the vehicle had become a well-known landmark, frequently photographed by tourists, a security worker at King’s Cross station named Haleem Ali was one of the first to realize that the car had disappeared in January.
"It was always there. I would take pictures of it. It’s a famous car," Ali said, according to Metro. "It’s such a beautiful car, the colour really sticks out...I’m really confused one day here, the next gone, it’s a mystery."
The car’s sudden disappearance even caught the attention of Franco Mauriello, a local café worker. "I’m Italian, and we love cars. I miss it already. I hope it comes back. It’s a talking point around here," he shared.
Its absence sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many users commenting that it had not moved for years, especially throughout the pandemic.
One person even joked: "He’s just out testing the rev counter on Oxford Street!" However, the mystery was finally cleared up when hotel staff revealed that the car’s owner had simply taken it on holiday.
A staff member revealed that the McLaren belongs to a British man who is a permanent resident at the St Pancras hotel.
"The owner is the son of someone very rich. He is British. He’s gone on holiday and taken the car," a staff member explained earlier this year. "He should be back with the car. He hasn’t moved out, as far as I know. He’s a very nice guy, very friendly."
So, it turns out the car, which was given a custom pink makeover by a specialist garage, was never abandoned - it was simply parked by its affluent owner, who made the iconic hotel his home.

A dog was left abandoned at an airport after its owners were told that it couldn't come on the plane with them without being crated.
Going on vacation while being a pet owner can be a stressful ordeal with people often being left having to put their beloved companion in a kennel or house them with somebody else.
But some pets, particularly dogs, are lucky enough to come along on the vacation and that's when the fun of getting them comes into play.
Most of us will agree that seeing a dog get abandoned is one of the most heartbreaking things in the world, so this sad pooch that got left at an airport will be sure to tug at the heartstrings.
The Allegheny County Police Department took to Facebook where they began the post with "Don't leave your pets behind!"
The social media post continued: "This morning at approximately 5:30 a.m., ACPD officers working at Pittsburgh International Airport were called to assist with a dog that was found unattended in a stroller on airport property.
"Officers were able to locate a microchip on the animal but attempts to reach the owner were unsuccessful. Investigators learned the dog’s owner was told by airline officials the dog needed to be placed in a crate in order to fly.
"The investigation revealed the owner then abandoned the dog near short-term parking and proceeded to board a flight. County police contacted the state dog warden to safely turn over the dog. A charge of animal abandonment is expected to be filed against the owner by the state dog warden."
KDKA reported that the pooch is now being cared for by Animal Friends, who released the following statement about the poor airport canine.
"As this case is under active investigation, we are unfortunately unable to comment at this time about the details of the case or the health status of the dog. Animal Friends' Humane Society Police Officers are pursuing an investigation into this case and reviewing possible charges.
"The dog will remain on hold, and Animal Friends is pleased to provide the necessary treatment and supportive care the dog needs until this case is resolved."
Each airline comes with specific requirements when traveling with animals, including the carriers that are needed in order to give the pet a safe journey.
It is advised to contact the specific airline that you are flying with before you depart to find out their regulations when it comes to animals onboard.
Service animals can be allowed to travel uncrated, but this should also be cleared with the airline prior to departure.
Hopefully, this poor dog will find new owners who will give it the life it deserves following this ordeal!
