A young couple's dream kayaking trip ended in tragedy when their bodies were found on an island named 'Death's Door.'
David Thalman, 20, and his girlfriend Francesca Warick, also 20, both hailed from Illinois but had headed out to Wisconsin for a vacation that ended in the loss of both their lives.
The pair were first reported missing on August 1, when they failed to return from a kayaking trip near Washington Island, a notorious spot known to locals as 'Death's Door,' due to the unpredictable nature of the passageway between the island and mainland.
Police reported Thalman and Warick had gone out without life jackets and a huge search effort was launched, which soon became an effort to recover their bodies.
After launching a search party, David Thalman's body was found at 10:55AM on Monday morning following his disappearance on Saturday, with his girlfriend Warick's body also recovered a short time later.
The deaths were classified as drowning by the local sheriff's office, although the incident is still under investigation by authorities, and officials have yet to release an official cause or manner of the couple's deaths.
Thalman, who skipped college after high school to start a career in real estate, was noted for his "warmth and gentle strength." Warick, a competitive cheerleader, was studying to become an esthetician who "above all else [...] loved her parents with all her heart."
Jane Lee, Thalman's boss at RE/MAX, revealed that the couple had been staying at his family's home on Washington Island when the tragedy occurred.
Washington Island in Winconsin is known locally as 'Death's Door,' due to the unpredictable nature of its currents. The island itself sits off the northeastern tip of the Wisconsin Door's peninsula.
The stretch of water that separates the island and the mainland is particularly notorious, given its strong currents and winds, rocky shores, and shifting sandbars.
More than 275 shipwrecks are thought to have occurred in the local area.
Thalman's boss, Lee, said she was in contact with him before he left for the trip and became concerned when he stopped replying to messages over the weekend, something that was out of character for him.
"If I text him," she said, "I get a response in a second."
Initially putting it down to bad cell phone reception, Lee became concerned when there was still no reply the next day. She contacted Thalman's mother, who informed her both he and Warick had gone missing after heading out kayaking on the island's waters.
The devastating news, Lee said, has left her entire office reeling.
"We all cried," she said. "Everyone was in shock."
