The driver of a derailed train was saved from a horrifying fate after the train was caught by a giant whale tail structure, Metro reports.

After the train - the driver of which has not been named - crashed through the barriers at the end of the track, it was moments away from falling into the water.

Fortunately, no one but the driver was on the train and the unidentified individual was able to escape to safety when the giant whale tale artwork broke the train's fall.

A local safety board spokesman told broadcaster NOS: "We are trying to decide how we can bring the train down in a careful and controlled manner."

The structure, made of polyester, is the work of Maarten Struijs and was placed in the water at the end of the tracks in 2002.

A neighbor said, per Metro: "We woke up at a quarter past twelve. There was a blow of two to three seconds. Then I suddenly saw that the tail was occupied. I thought: hey, something very strange is going on."

Per Sky News, authorities instructed sightseers to keep away after a number of people ignored COVID-19 guidelines to see the derailed train, which workers are trying to remove from the whale tail structure. In spite of this, around 50 people remained.

According to ABC News, an individual named Killian Lindenburg recorded footage showing the train being held up and supported by the whale tale.
