Just when you thought 2020 couldn't get more bizarre...

Workers in Mexico City have discovered a 'giant rat' among 22 tonnes of garbage that had been pulled from the city's drainage system following heavy storms. But before you start scanning for gamma rays, the huge rodent is actually a long-lost Halloween prop.

As first reported by Border Report, the rat is simply a hollow mascot - but that didn't stop passers-by from stopping in the streets and taking pictures of the terrifying find.

The news report below shows workers hosing down the incredibly realistic rodent:

According to the publication, the giant rat was being stored in a warehouse when it was suddenly washed away during storms several years ago - somehow finding itself in the labyrinth of drains under the city.

Local news outlet El Tiempo reports that the rat was found close to the Magdalena River in the Mexican capital.

Workers were instructed to clear the drains following a period of heavy rainfall on Friday, September 18.

Tragically, the blocked drains and heavy rainfall resulted in floods of more than two meters in height has resulted in the death of one woman.

El Tiempo has reported that authorities have set up temporary shelters for families who have been displaced as a result of the floods.

On September 17, Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum told local reporters that the previous day’s rainfall was the worst the city had suffered through in the last 20 years.

Per Wave 3 News, Mexico City workers have identified the rat's rightful owner as Evelin López, who has revealed that nobody ever helped her get her rodent back after it had gone missing.

López added that the rat was originally used as a Halloween prop, but says she doesn't know what to do with it now it has been found.

Well, Halloween is right around the corner, Evelin.
