A young woman from Perth made a monumental mistake when booking somewhere to party in Bali. What would have already been an expensive night out for a group of friends ended up costing them more than six times what they expected and wiping the influencer’s bank account.
Hayley Davis has since urged other tourists to check conversion rates before leaving a bank card behind the bar.
In the days leading up to New Year's Eve, Hayley booked a luxury daybed at an exclusive Bali beach club for what she thought was $1,650, but discovered days later that she had been charged an eye-watering amount more.
As she is usually the organized one out of her group of friends, Hayley booked a luxury daybed at Atlas Super Club in Kuta, where American rapper Swae Lee was performing, at short notice, as many other events on the island were booked up for the holiday.
Although it was in a prime spot right next to the stage and had a private pool, the friends thought that even $1,650 seemed expensive. The group then began ordering plenty of drinks, food, and shisha. In a video posted to TikTok on the day, Hayley said: “We are literally living like the rich”. It quickly went viral, gaining over 300,000 views.
Despite the payment not initially going through on the credit card, Hayley was not concerned about the price; she simply transferred the money to a friend so they could pay with another card. That card failed and returned an “insufficient funds” message.
After assuming something was wrong with the bank, Hayley called Atlas and paid over the phone. She later put a screenshot of the receipt on the group chat, but still no one spotted the grave mistake.
On the day, Hayley even tried to stop her friends from ordering more shisha, as she was worried about going over their spending limit. It wasn’t until their waitress attempted to explain that the group still had a lot of money left on the tab that anyone became suspicious about how much they had spent.
However, Hayley claimed that a language barrier meant that she did not understand what the waitress was trying to tell her. Confused, she told the staff to keep the remainder of their tab as a tip. Little did she know it was a more than generous $7,000 tip.
It was not until three days later that reality hit when Hayley tried to buy around $20 worth of McDonald’s, but her card was declined.
While at first she thought she had been scammed, moments later she realized the mammoth mistake she had made. Hayley saw that she had been charged $10,650 for the spot in the club that she thought cost $1,650.
Thankfully, her friends chipped in to help her cover the eye-watering bill.
Sharing the story on social media, the influencer said: “Before I aired this, I knew it was stupid. I know it could have been easily avoided. I don’t need to hear it.”
