The chilling footage was filmed by Dan White during a deep dive near Brothers Island, Egypt, in 2018.
White, a diver from Surrey, had been working toward his deep diver certification when a white tip shark unexpectedly turned aggressive, launching a brutal attack on one of his fellow divers.
Watch the video below:White told Tracking Sharks that the dive initially appeared harmless. “I thought it was a cool encounter,” he admitted, saying he had dived with three whitetips the day before without issue.
But this time, things quickly escalated after another diver’s air bubbles appeared to spook the shark. “The shark made three [bump] attempts on Ian, but he fended it off each time. After the third bump, one of the German divers came to help Ian,” White explained.
That’s when the attack began: “The German diver’s buddy saw the shark attempting to have a cheeky nibble on Ian but failed to keep his eye on the shark as it rose to his level and bit his leg."
“His buddy wrestled the shark off of him, but by that point, the damage was done,” White said. Adding that the shark wrestler "had some serious b***s" wrestling the shark!
The attack was caught in terrifying detail. As the shark closes its jaws around the victim’s calf, his agonized scream can be heard clearly through the water - an eerie sound that has shocked viewers across the internet.
Despite the chaos, the group managed to get the injured man to the surface and out of the water. His calf was completely shredded as the predator bit down to the bone.
Emergency responders administered pain medication and applied a tourniquet before rushing him to shore. Miraculously, doctors were able to save his leg from amputation.
The viral clip has sparked a flood of online reactions, with commenters calling the video “very scary.”
One viewer wrote: “The most chilling part of this is still being able to hear the screaming under water," while another added: "All I could think was 'The sound of his screams carried well under water!'"

While the Egypt incident remains one of the most disturbing shark attacks caught on film, this week there was another horrifying encounter - this time in Hadera, Israel.
A video filmed by beachgoers showed a diver screaming: “They’re biting me!” as he fought a shark in the waves, per Times of Israel.
Witnesses on the shore were left powerless, with one yelling: “They’re eating him, eating the man!” Another added: “Wow, wow, he’s with the shark, he’s fighting him.”
Human remains were later discovered, and although police have yet to confirm if they belonged to the missing diver, the tragedy sent shockwaves through the local community.
One eyewitness, Shlomo, said: “We were just walking down to the water when we saw someone flailing in the sea - fighting a shark and trying to get away. The shark lunged at him. It was hard to watch... It could’ve been me.”
Though the breed of shark responsible in Israel is unconfirmed, marine experts believe it may have been a dusky or sandbar shark, species typically considered non-aggressive.
Yigael Ben-Ari, head of marine rangers at the Israel Nature and Parks Authority, noted that this was only the third recorded shark attack in Israel in the last 80 years.
