Ukrainian soldiers appear to have taken on a new canine "watchdog" amid the fighting against Russian troops.

In a video widely shared across social media and by news outlets such as The Independent, the soldiers are seen talking to reporters about their new four-legged companion, who they named Rambo.

They revealed that they took the vulnerable pooch in because it was freezing outside, and it's proven to be a mutually beneficial arrangement.

Check out the video below:

In the minute-long clip, the armed Ukrainian troops are heard saying (as translated by FreedomNews.TV): "He is our protector. Right, Rambo?"

"We felt sorry for him. It was freezing outside," the soldiers said, adding: "We took him into our post, and he stayed with us."

The young canine, who is mostly black with a little beige, can be seen wagging its tail in the sweet video.

"He is our security. That is his job," one of the troops tells the camera as a reporter is heard chuckling.

"He is our watchdog," another soldier remarks as the puppy scurries around. "He can hear very well if there is a stranger nearby."

And the little pup is said to be doing its job fantastically.

"He can hear very well if there is a stranger nearby," a soldier said. "Rambo is doing a good job! Best doggo," said another soldier.

The video has been shared all over social media, including Reddit, where commenters shared their glee over the adorable interaction between the dog and the soldiers.

In a lengthy comment, one user wrote: "Aww Rambo is so cute. This just sucks. These soldiers armed to the teeth knowing they may perish defending their homeland and here they still pause to googoo a sweet little puppy.

"Humans aren’t built for war anymore. We have too much access to each other now, we’ve found out that the person we converse with over the internet an ocean away lives the same life and wants the same things we do. Bully dictators like Putin cannot demonize other nations with their lies and propaganda anymore. They can’t make us hate people we know now are just like us.

"We all want to live free lives with a roof over our heads and food in our bellies while we cuddle our puppies and keep them safe."

Another chimed in: "Making war a little less hellish. Stay strong, Ukraine!"
