Vladimir Putin believes that Joe Biden was right to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan, Reuters reported.

The Russian president's remarks on Thursday, October 21, were directed at reporters and were made in the same week that his country hosted talks with senior spokespeople from the Taliban in Moscow.

The Taliban has not formally been recognized as the Afghan government either by Russia or the US.

However, following the recent meeting, the militant group won the support of Russia and nine other regional powers in calling for a UN donor conference aimed at boosting Afghanistan's developing economy and preventing a humanitarian catastrophe.

China, Pakistan, India, Iran, and five former Soviet Central Asian states joined Russia and the Taliban in calling for the UN to organize such a conference as quickly as possible in order to help rebuild the country.

Putin also urged America to "unfreeze Afghan assets and give Afghanistan a possibility to solve top priority social and economic tasks," according to the state-owned TASS news agency.

After the Taliban seized control of the country, the US froze billions of dollars the Afghan central bank holds in reserves, which are, for the most part, stored in the US.

On Tuesday, October 19, Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo indicated that the Taliban would not gain access to the reserves.

Per Reuters, Adeyemo told the Senate Banking Committee: "We believe that it's essential that we maintain our sanctions against the Taliban but at the same time find ways for legitimate humanitarian assistance to get to the Afghan people. That's exactly what we're doing."

He added: "Our goal is to make sure that we are implementing our sanctions regime against the Taliban and the Haqqani network, but at the same time allowing for the permissible flow of humanitarian assistance into the country."

While Putin said he supported the US president's decision to withdraw all US troops from Afghanistan, Biden has faced a great deal of criticism for his handling of the situation.

The withdrawal effort coincided with the Taliban seizing power in the country for the first time in 20 years. The group's previous regime ran between 1996 and 2001.
