An inspirational WW11 veteran's fundraiser for the NHS has surpassed £12,000,000.

Ninety-nine-year-old Tom Moore started out with the aim of raising £1,000 ahead of his 100th birthday later this month. Moore hoped to do so by completing 100 laps of his 25-meter Bedfordshire garden.

He said it was his way of giving back to the public health system which has helped him out many times over the years.

However, after a surge of support on Tuesday, which saw the Just Giving fundraiser top a million by 9 AM, Moore has smashed his target and has now raised a staggering twelve million pounds ($14,982,900).

Celebrating the ten million milestone, the 99-year-old's Twitter account said: "Virtutis Fortuna Comes. I want to thank all the people behind the scenes including @JustGiving, @BBCBreakfast and @GMB for being behind us from the start, and all the wonderful people donating!"

Moore's JustGiving page contains a brief biography of the hero veteran. It reads: "Tom was born and brought up in Keighley, Yorkshire. He went to Keighley Grammar School and later completed an apprenticeship as a Civil Engineer.

"Tom went onto being enlisted in 8 DWR (145 RAC) at the beginning of the war, and in 1940 was selected for Officer training.

He was later posted to 9DWR in India, and served and fought on the Arakan, went to Regiment to Sumatra after the Japanese surrender and returned to be Instructor at Armoured Fighting Vehicle School in Bovington."

Moore's incredible achievement was even acknowledged by the British Health Secretary Matt Hancock at the government's daily coronavirus briefing.

Hancock said: "Captain Tom, you're an inspiration to us all and we thank you."

At the time of writing, Moore's campaign has been backed by 6,316,60 supporters and is well on its way to reaching the £13,000,000 milestone too, which will give the NHS a much-needed boost during the coronavirus pandemic.
