In a new documentary, Christopher Reeve has revealed the seven words his wife said to him that "saved his life" after the accident that paralyzed him.
Reeve, who first donned the cape as Superman in 1978 and reprised the role in three sequels, became a symbol of resilience after his accident.
The actor suffered a life-altering injury in 1995 during a horse riding event in Culpeper, Virginia.
While attempting a third jump, Reeve's horse hesitated, causing the actor to take a catastrophic fall.
He landed headfirst on the rail, severely injuring his neck and leaving him paralyzed from the neck down.
The new documentary, produced by DC Studios, had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January and will arrive in select theaters next month.
Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story offers an emotional look at Reeve's rise to fame and his transformation into a tireless advocate for those affected by paralysis.
Check out the trailer below:
His efforts included leading the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation and co-founding the Reeve-Irvine Research Center.
In previously unseen footage featured in the documentary, Reeve candidly recalls his mindset during the early stages of his recovery.
He admits it was his wife, Dana, who provided the strength he needed to continue.
"I ruined my life and everybody else’s. I won’t be able to ski, sail, throw a ball to Will. Won’t be able to make love to Dana. Maybe we should let me go," Reeve remembered thinking.
"And then she said the words that saved my life: ‘You’re still you. And I love you.’”
Following the accident, Reeve endured numerous hospital visits and extensive speech therapy as part of his recovery.
Reflecting on the experience during an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Reeve shared how his perspective on life shifted dramatically.
"Every day I'd get in my car and drive away and go, 'Thank God that's not me', I have to admit that," he confessed. "And then seven months later, I was in this condition."
Reeve continued: "In a way, I remember the smugness of that. As if I was privileged in some way, but the point is we're all one great big family and any one of us could get hurt at any moment. That taught me a really big lesson."
The documentary also features touching memories from Reeve’s son Matthew, 44, who recalls the last time he saw his father before the life-altering accident.
“We said goodbye, he gave this wave,” Matthew remembers. “That was the last time I saw him on his feet.”
Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story includes interviews with Reeve’s three children— Matthew, Alexandra, 40, and Will, 32 — and his late wife Dana, who passed away in 2006 from lung cancer.
Reeve passed away in 2004 at the age of 52.
Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is set to release in select theaters on September 21.

Much like Harry Potter, I'm often told that I look virtually identical to my dad. It's something which has dogged my entire life, but despite how sick I am of hearing about it, I have to admit, it is true. We do look exactly alike. Now this isn't such a big deal for an unrecognisable nobody like me; but imagine how much more weird it is for a celebrity. Yup; Hollywood is populated by a fair few celebrity dynasties these days, where it seems like the whole family is famous. In that situation, it's even harder for the kids of superstars to step out of their parent's shadow.
Nowadays there are a fair few celeb-offspring walking around that are fully-grown adults in their own right; who look the spitting image of their mom and dad when they were the same age as they are now. If you don't believe me then just scroll down to take a look at some incredibly similar father-son duos. See if you can tell who's who!

So there you have it. Isn't the resemblance just uncanny? But there are disadvantages to being the child of a famous A-lister. For example, very recently, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith's daughter Willow has opened up in a candid interview about the awful reality of being the child of two Hollywood superstars.

Over 50 years after winning Mr. Olympia for the first time aged just 23, Arnold Schwarzenegger's son is apparently on track to overtake him in weightlifting.
Schwarzenegger has worn many hats in his lifetime - actor, politician, father - but it's his reputation as a successful professional bodybuilder that has earned him all the street cred.
Father to five, only one of the 75-year-old's children has followed in his father's footsteps when it comes to acting and pumping iron - his 25-year-old son Joseph Baena.
Having dabbled in acting recently, Baena went to support his dad at the Fubar red carpet, where he opened up about his relationship with the 'Austrian Oak'.
Speaking to Extra TV, Baena was asked what the "best piece of advice" his father had given him was, when the star had first begun following in his father's footsteps. "I mean, just with anything that I do, but especially with acting, he's really supportive and always, you know, pushing me to work really hard, and then make it my own and, and do it on my own," he revealed.
The Bully High actor continued: "But his main piece of advice has always been, do the reps - and it sounds just like the gym - but it really makes sense because it's all about practice, practice, practice. The more that you practice, the more that you prepare for these roles, the better you're going to be and, and I've taken that to heart and I've taken that into every role that I've been doing."
Further into the interview, Baena explained that Schwarzenegger was the best gym partner... Well, duh! He even revealed that he is finally starting to "catch up" with the seven-time Mr. Olympia at the gym. "I'm starting to starting to lift a little," he said, "I'm starting to catch up with the weights but, you know, he pushes me so much in the gym and and we love training together."
When the reporter asked who was the stronger out of the two, Baena diplomatically answered: "Right now, I don't want to say but he'll always be the strongest in the family."
Baena's red carpet interview comes months after he revealed that Schwarzenegger - who had Baena following an affair with his housekeeper Mildred Baena - chose to stop financially supporting him after he graduated college.
The young star discovered that he was the son of the bodybuilding legend back in 2011 from his grandmother, and has since said that the revelation "transformed" his life.
Appearing on the Unwaxed podcast - hosted by two of Sylvester Stallone's daughters, Sophia and Sistine - Baena stated: "I'm really grateful that my dad helped me get through college. But right when college was done, it was just like, 'You go. You're on your own.' I was like, 'Oh, s**t'."
Baena then added that he became a realtor to support himself when finishing college. "I needed a job, and I was not getting any of the acting roles that I thought I was going to get," he said. "I was like, 'I need to do something', so I started interning at this real estate company," he revealed.
Clearly, he's taken Arnie's advice and done the reps!

In a phenomenon I like to refer to as the Chris-ening of Hollywood, it appears that four men, who all bear the same name, have taken over the entertainment industry. And they seem to have a thing for the Marvel Cinematic Universe too: Chris Pine recently starred in Wonder Woman, Chris Hemsworth is better known as Thor, Chris Pratt is the star of Guardians of the Galaxy and Chris Evans plays Captain America.
Now, throughout this process, we've all wondered the same question - out of these four genetically blessed men - who could possibly be considered the most attractive? Fellow heartthrob and superhero, Ryan Reynolds, perhaps had the best answer to this conundrum. When someone asked him on Twitter, "Which Chris is hotter, Hemsworth, Pratt, or Evans?" he failed to pick one singular Chris.
The Deadpool star wrote, "When ordering ice cream, I like to get all three scoops."
I mean, why not all of them?

And he went one step further, too, adding in a follow-up tweet: "And of course, some Pine nuts generously sprinkled on top."

However, Thor actor, Chris Hemsworth, recently proved that it's all to do with winning the genetic lottery. The 34-year-old took to Instagram to share an adorable snap of his parents, and fans think that his mother looks super young.
The photo of Chris nestled among his parents, Leonie and Craig, in the stands of the Commonwealth Games garnered a whole host of comments - the majority of which praised the good looks of the family.
"Commonwealth games with Mum dad and @emerysurfboards#gc2018 yeoooooooow!!" the actor captioned the image.

One Instagram user wrote, "Wow! Thought your mum was a girl friend, looking so young!! Your father looking good too. Good spirit!" while another corroborated "Is that really your mom???? Omg STUNNING af".
A third individual referred to Mrs. Hemsworth as "foxy" when someone added "Mrs Hemsworth is foxy. Mr Hemsworth looks like a charmer in good shape. Good genes Thor."
If you can't get enough of the Hemsworth's, here's another adorable snap of (nearly) all of them together.

Chris is the middle of three Hemsworth brothers - all of whom are actors. There's the oldest, Luke, and the youngest is Liam.
The Thor actor recently opened up to W magazine about how he nabbed the Marvel role. Explaining that he normally gets typecast as the jock sort, the actor said "I remembered reading the breakdown for Thor and it said, 'Must be over 6'3" and 200 pounds,' and so on. I thought, 'Oh cool. This is the one thing that sort of fits me.'"
He then revealed that he blew his first audition, and that the producers of the series had the audacity to call up his younger brother, Liam. "Months went by and then my brother, my little brother, Liam, was in Australia and sent a tape across and he got a call back, then another call back and then was down to the last kind of four or five people for it," Chris continued.
It all worked out in the end, though, with a little help from mama Hemsworth:
"I remember sitting in Vancouver, shooting Cabin in the Woods with Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon. Both of them were looking at the trades at this sort of top five guys for Thor and saying, 'Why aren't you in the mix here? What happened?' I said, 'I don't know. I blew my audition I guess.' None of those guys got it. My manager then called up and said, 'You know, he's got an older brother. Can we bring him back in?' So I did an audition in Vancouver in this hotel room with my mum reading Anthony Hopkins' part. She must have nailed it because it got me back in the room and that second audition was a lot different than my first one.
"I came in kind of with a little, I guess, motivation and maybe frustration that my little brother had gotten further than me. It's a little family, sibling rivalry sort of kicked up in me. Then it moved pretty quick from there. It was cool," he concluded.

Michael J. Fox's son has shared a moving Father's Day tribute to his father, who he heartwarmingly referred to as "pops".
A slew of celebrities paid tribute to their fathers, grandfathers, and father figures over the weekend, and the Back to the Future actor certainly wasn't forgotten!
The 62-year-old actor's eldest child - and only son - Sam Fox took to social media on Sunday to celebrate his father, posting a sweet image of himself standing next to his dad as a youngster and holding a framed Hollywood Walk of Fame star with J. Fox's name engraved on the front.
The caption of the image read: "Happy Father's Day pops! Love you!!"
Fox himself took to the comments section to thank his son, writing: "You can't be a super dad unless you have a super son. [Sam Fox] is the cats ass. Proud Pops [sic]."
Other people took the time to praise the Family Ties actor and his family, with one person commenting: "And we admire your Father! Happy Father's Day to such an amazing human being, and example for everyone!"
A further user chimed in with: "Happy Father's Day!! [Michael J. Fox] You and [Fox's wife, Tracy Pollan] have amazing kids!"
Fox's Father's Day tribute comes just over a month after he opened up about his more than three-decade-long battle with Parkinson's, a long-term degenerative disorder that affects the nervous system and motor skills.
The Canadian actor first discovered he had the degenerative condition when he was just 29 years old in 1991, after he complained of a twitching little finger and a sore shoulder. He didn't go public with his diagnosis for another seven years, instead dealing with the progressive disorder by drinking excessively behind the scenes.
Fox has been transparent about his struggles in accepting his diagnosis of Parkinson's, especially during its early stages. Though, eventually, he says he learned to see it as a "gift." In May this year, Fox appeared on the Australian nighttime current affair talk show The Project, where he revealed that he was "really happy" with the way his life has turned out after dedicating years to finding a cure for Parkinson's.
"I always say Parkinson's is a gift [...] It is the gift that keeps on taking, but it is a gift,'" he told the show's host Waleed Aly, via The Daily Mail.
"I'm really happy with the way my life has turned out and I love the chance I have to be of service," Fox added.
He also explained to CBS Sunday Mornings that his mindset isn't always as positive. "It's getting tougher; every day it gets tougher," he said about living with his condition to journalist Jane Pauley. He described Parkinson's as "the gift that keeps on taking" due to his symptoms, which include tremors, impaired movement, and muscle stiffness.
The actor has been tireless in his constant campaigning for Parkinson's research, with his own foundation raising funds for research into why the condition affects certain people and whether it can be diagnosed before symptoms even start. The Michael J. Fox Foundation also aims to work on alternative treatments and a potential cure so that other people who live with Parkinson's can have a better quality of life.
