With a 'bomb cyclone' about to attack the East Coast, and the president tweeting childish threats to North Korea's crazy dictator, 2018 is not off to a great start. And we're only a couple days into January! Luckily, there is some positive news: Ellen Page announced her marriage to longtime girlfirend (and now wife) Emma Portner.
You probably know Ellen for her famous movie roles, like the precocious pregnant teenager Juno or the "phasing" mutant superhero Kitty Pryde in the X-Men series. However, she's also been a strong advocate for LGBT rights. In February 2014, she officially came out, and her speech got a standing ovation. "I am here today because I am gay," said Ellen. "And because maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility."

Ellen also stands up for women's rights. Last year, during the maelstrom of sexual assault allegations in Hollywood, she wrote a passionate Facebook post describing her disturbing experiences with harassment. This included one incident with director Brett Ratner, when she was only eighteen years old. At a meet-and-greet, Ratner crudely outed her in front of the cast and crew, telling a nearby woman, "You should f--k [Ellen] to make her realize she's gay." (That's why he's such a great director; he really knows how to make actors feel comfortable.)

But now it's on to happier times. The 30-year-old Inception actress kicked off the new year by announcing her marriage, to the surprise of her 1.2 million followers on Instagram. Ellen shared several photos of herself with Emma, including one that just shows their hands, with the caption: "Can’t believe I get to call this extraordinary woman my wife." Meanwhile, Emma shared the same picture on her account, with the caption: "I get to call this incredible woman MY WIFE! @ellenpage I LOVE YOU!"

You're probably wondering - who's Emma Portner? Originally from Ontario, Canada, Emma teaches dance in New York City, and worked as a choreographer for Justin Bieber during one of his world tours. She actually met Ellen through Instagram, after one of the music videos she choreographed went viral. In an interview with The Cut, Emma said she has no problem dating a celebrity:
"It’s quite crazy. But if anything, I’m happy for it. We try to hold hands in public. I try to join her at movie premieres. If we were a straight couple, I don’t think we’d push it so much. But it’s a chance for queerness to be out in the open.”
There are still a lot of details we don't know, like where the wedding took place and what the brides were wearing and whether or not Brett Ratner crashed the ceremony drunk and said anything stupid. For now, you'll have to satisfied with this Instagram video of the couple dancing together.

On Twitter, Ellen's fans were thrilled with the announcement:

See? 2018 isn't all bad. We might get buried by a arctic hurricane, or bombed by Kim Jong-Un's anthrax-tipped missiles, but hey, at least Ellen Page got married.
