Blake Lively fans have been left utterly devastated after it was announced that the actress has been cast as the lead in the movie adaptation of It Ends With Us.

Now, I know what you're thinking: Shouldn't this be good news? Blake Lively is a great actor and beyond her professional career, she's an absolute sweetheart that deserves recognition for her talent, but this problem doesn't seem to be with the 35-year-old star.

Instead, it seems to be with the author of the original novel.

In a corner of the internet where Booktok exists, Colleen Hoover's 'It Ends With Us' is not a popular piece of work - well, not amongst social media users anyway.

It tells the story of a girl named Lily (who will be portrayed by Lively) who moves after finishing college and falls for a guy named Ryle. But as her feelings develop, her first love, Atlas makes a dramatic reappearance.

Even though was the top-selling print book of 2022 and has been on the New York Times Best Seller List for over 90 weeks, the book has also been slammed for its problematic ways of portraying relationships, and in particular, domestic abuse.

According to an article by We Got This Covered, despite this book being based on Hoover's own personal experiences associated with her parents' relationship, many raised concerns about the harmful tropes that arise in multiple of her books that seem to "romanticize toxic masculine behavior."

And this is why Lively fans are disappointed over her taking on a role in the soon-to-be film adaptation.

"Blake Lively as lily blossom bloom??? at this point, they should really just cancel the project, no one wants it," this user wrote while another added: "Someone please check on Blake Lively. I just know Colleen Hoover is blackmailing her into doing this movie #ItEndsWithUsMovie."

A third said: "Blake Lively is gonna turn 'it ends with us' into an oscar winning movie i hate this COHO CANT GET AWAY WITH THIS."

"Me going back in time to stop blake lively from auditioning for it ends with us."

"Blake Lively playing lily bloom in the it ends with us movie was not on my 2023 bingo card at all," another user said, confused.

This user was confused to see the actress trending, and was disappointed to see why: "I was wondering why Blake Lively is trending and I was not expecting to see what I read."

And another user pointed out something else altogether, shocking Lively fans: "Blake Lively is the same woman who didn’t care about getting married on a slave plantation i don’t think it’s surprising she probably has colleen hoover on speed dial and is going to be in the adaption. this is very on brand. and even more so that some are going to watch for her."

Justin Baldoni, who will not only be playing Ryle, but will also be directing the piece, has also received criticism for his part in the movie too.

"Justin Baldoni crafted his entire image to be a role model to create emotionally open and sensitive young men. And now he’s not just starring in this awful adaptation, but DIRECTING it?? With BLAKE LIVELY??? Insanity."

It comes as Hoover recently took to Instagram to make the highly-anticipated announcement.

"Our Lily is going to be played by Blake Lively. Blake Lively, y’all. She’s my dream Lily," she told fans.

While other details surrounding the project are still tightly under wraps, Cosmopolitan reported that the film has been in the works since 2019.
