Brooke Shields has reflected on the tumultuous relationship she had with her mom during a recent interview.

The 57-year-old had been appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show to discuss her latest documentary Pretty Baby, and her and Barrymore's complicated mother-daughter relationships.

Both child stars, Shields and Barrymore shared details about their unusual upbringings.

The talk-show host then asked the Blue Lagoon actress whether her mother, Teri, had dated any of her former partners as Barrymore's mother, Jaid Barrymore, had. "My mom, like, went and dated my boyfriends. Did you ever have that weird situation with your mom?"

Check out Shield's appearance on the show:

"No, because she was in love with me," Shields replied. She then went on to clarify that her mother had no interest in dating men because she was too busy managing her Shields' career. "I was her main focus. Both of us were cut off from our sexuality. I was going to stay a virgin. She was going to be just Terri terrific and being there."

Barrymore then chimed in with a comment about how her own mother was "so enamored with me that she wanted to be with the people I was with," at which point Shields responded: "I get it. It's so needy and weird."

Later on, Barrymore asked Shields why her mother Teri seemed to be by her side during every interview she took part in as a child. Shields discussed her codependency with Teri, explaining that her mother appeared next to her when she was a child star out of strong desire to look after and protect her. "It was: 'No one's gonna get you. I'm gonna be there. I'm there first. You're mine. I'm not going to give you to somebody,'" she said.

She then added that this was probably "under the guise of protection, but it was more ownership and fear, I think."

Shields' highly anticipated documentary has been met with praise from numerous outlets - including Vanity Fair - as she documented her inappropriate experiences with older men as a child star. In the Hulu documentary, Shields' volatile relationship with Teri was a large focus. Teri - who died in 2012 - was, according to Shields, a stage mom whose only focus was making her daughter famous.

One scene in the documentary features a clip of Barbara Walters asking Teri: "Can't someone say to you that you are exploiting the sensuality of a child?" At which point Teri answers: "If that's all I was doing, probably, yes. But that's not all I'm doing with Brooke, or what Brooke is doing."
