Anya Taylor-Joy is without a doubt one of the most sought-after and recognizable actors in the world right now.
The American-Argentine-British star first gained international acclaim as Casey Cooke in M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable trilogy. However, throughout the pandemic, many of us stayed home and watched Taylor-Joy wow audiences in Netflix's critically acclaimed series, The Queen's Gambit.
And, most recently, video games fans have seen the 27-year-old star successfully bring Princess Peach Toadstall in the big screen in the new Super Mario Bros. Movie.
However, despite clearly captivating viewers, the actor has admitted that she has struggled with certain elements of her appearance in the past. Most notably, her eyes.
Yes, despite her beautiful façade, a quick search on Twitter will show you that Taylor-Joy has been ridiculed by many trolls for her distinct eyes. And, somewhat bafflingly, this was something she was asked about in a 2016 interview - when she was just 20 years old.
Speaking with W Magazine, the transcript for the interview shows that the interviewer asked the Peaky Blinders star: "You have those beautiful eyes and they’re so far apart. When you were a kid, did they make you self-conscious?"
Devastatingly, Taylor-Joy admitted that she has always received ridicule for her eyes on social media, saying: "I can definitely remember when Facebook was a thing and I was never aware that my eyes were far apart and then someone tagged me in a picture with a fish and they were like, 'This is you ’cause your eyes are like here.'"
Unsurprisingly, she revealed that the post made her "really upset" - to the point where she "stopped looking in mirrors for a very long time.:
"I still don’t really spend a lot of time in front of mirrors because I don’t really have to deal with my face," she added, before quipping: "Unfortunately, y’all do."
Fortunately, a few years later in 2019, Taylor-Joy revealed that her experience with social media had changed.
Speaking to Vogue, she revealed that she was initially "quite wary of social media", but recognized that it is now such a crucial part of an actor's career.
But rather than receive mean comments from trolls, she said: "I’ve really enjoyed is that luckily I don’t get a lot of hate on my Instagram. The people who enjoy my work tend to be quite lovely, so it’s nice to have a community of people who are bigging you up!"
That's what we want to hear!
Oh, and if you've got large and distinctive eyes like Taylor-Joy, she recommends going for a solid-color lipstick. Just, FYI.
