Body language expert points out what Timothée Chalamet did after Michael B. Jordan won Oscar
Timothée Chalamet’s reaction after losing Best Actor at the Oscars is getting a lot of attention online and a body language expert says the moment revealed more than viewers might think.
The Marty Supreme star, 30, was nominated for Best Actor at the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday night, but ultimately lost out on the gold statuette.
Instead, the award went to Michael B. Jordan for his breathtaking performance in Sinners, which proved to be one of the biggest wins of the evening.
But while the moment was a major victory for the Sinners star, many viewers quickly turned their attention to Chalamet’s reaction in the audience.
Cameras briefly cut to the actor sitting beside his girlfriend Kylie Jenner as Jordan walked toward the stage to accept his first Oscar.
According to body language expert Darren Stanton, Chalamet’s response appeared completely genuine.
Speaking to Covers, Stanton explained that the actor didn’t show the kinds of subtle expressions of disappointment that are sometimes spotted during awards shows.
“Timothée Chalamet was genuinely happy for Michael,” the expert said.
“Sometimes we see microexpressions of sadness or disappointment from another nominee, but he seemed genuinely pleased at the moment it was announced.”
Stanton added that the Marty Supreme star appeared to fully accept the outcome of the category.
“He knows it’s all part of the game, win or lose,” the expert explained. “He didn’t flash any animosity, anger, or jealousy.”
While the 30-year-old actor appeared relaxed in the moment, the expert noted that Kylie Jenner’s reaction suggested she may have been feeling the loss more deeply.
The Kardashian-Jenner star, who has accompanied the actor throughout much of the recent awards season, appeared supportive but slightly disappointed as the cameras captured the couple in the audience.
“When it came to Kylie, she wasn’t flashing any negative emotions like anger or contempt,” Stanton said. “From her facial expressions, she just seemed disappointed for Timothée.”
But the biggest reaction of the night may have come from the winner himself.
Stanton pointed out that Michael B. Jordan appeared visibly stunned when his name was announced.
“Michael B. Jordan was genuinely gobsmacked,” he said. “It took him a few moments to fully register what had happened — he appeared completely stunned and shell-shocked.”
The expert also called attention to Jordan’s acceptance speech as further evidence of his surprise.
“In terms of his delivery during the speech, he came across as a genuine and very humble guy,” Stanton added. “He didn’t try to be funny or clever — he spoke authentically from the heart.”
For Timothée Chalamet, the loss marks another near miss at the Academy Awards after three Best Actor nominations.
