Brendan Fraser is in the new movie Killers of the Flower Moon and his performance has gained some complaints - but his fans are on hand to defend him.
The beloved actor had a great 2023 as he picked up the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in The Whale - and if you haven't seen it yet, do yourself a favor and go and watch it!
Now the 54-year-old actor is on the big screen in Killers of the Flower Moon alongside Leonardo Di Caprio and Robert De Niro, and it's directed by Martin Scorsese.
In a gripping narrative set in the late 19th century, Killers of the Flower Moon delves into the harrowing tale of the Osage people, who were brutally murdered after the discovery of oil on their land, leading to a treacherous betrayal by those who coveted their newfound wealth.
Watch the Killers of the Flower Moon trailer below:Fraser steps into the shoes of W.S. Hamilton William, the attorney for the enigmatic William King Hale, portrayed by De Niro. Given Hale's dark role in the Osage murders, it's not hard to imagine the pragmatic demeanor one might expect from his attorney.
However, some critics have voiced their disapproval of Fraser's portrayal in the film.
One person tweeted: "Brendan Fraser's entrance in Killers of the Flower Moon. It was almost like he was dragged out from the set of The Whale."
A second added: "I thought it was awful and was just telling someone the same. I get that Hollywood owes Brendan Fraser a great deal, but he was out of his league."
However, you can't bad-mouth Fraser online and expect to get away with it, as his fans demonstrated.
One said: "I’m sorry but this is fantastic. It’s hammy and performative because that’s how some lawyers act in court. You can’t convince me this wasn’t an intentional choice because Fraser’s performance is much different outside the courtroom."
A second person added: "If you got a problem with Brendan Fraser in KotFM, you've got a problem with me," while a third said: "Guy who has only seen Brendan Fraser in The Whale watching him in Killers of the Flower Moon: wow why is he acting the same as in The Whale."
A fourth person concluded: "The fact we are talking about Brendan Fraser's mere 2 minute performance in KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON only proves how memorable he was. He made the most of what little screentime he had."
Fraser's return to the spotlight has been a topic of interest after a hiatus from Hollywood that spanned from 2013 to 2019.
In 2018, the actor made headlines in a GQ profile in which he alleged that he was sexually assaulted by Philip Berk - a former president and member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
This led Fraser to boycott the 2023 Golden Globes ceremony, as he stated: "It’s because I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I have respect for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and my mother didn’t raise a hypocrite. You can call me a lot of things, but not that."
