Dax Shepard reveals the adorable reason he proposed to Kristen Bell despite not believing in marriage

As far as marriages go, the world of celebrity couplings seems twice as precarious as our regular relationships. With the likes of Chris Pratt and Channing Tatum all going through high-profile splits in the past 12 months, you could be forgiven for giving up on love altogether, but the likes of Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell give us hope.

The pair have been married since 2013, and although they're not the most conventional couple you've seen grace the red carpet, but they genuinely seem to love one another. While they've had their issues in the past (what couple doesn't?), they've pulled through and made each other stronger in the process.

But as Dax Shepard revealed, the couple might not have gotten married at all - Dax didn't believe in marriage, one bit. That's what Dax said in an interview with PEOPLE, at least. Shepard revealed the extent to which he and Bell work on their marriage, and it's kind of heartwarming the effort the couple put in for one another.

"We definitely had to work really hard at being a couple because we’re both incredibly, painfully stubborn, and we’re pretty much opposites," Dax Shepard said. The couple met in 2007, but reconnected at an event in 2013 - but just a few months into things, Dax broke it off.

He wasn't a staunch believer in marriage or a traditional relationship, but soon, Kristen Bell managed to change his mind. "I was like, 'That’s the best personality I’ve ever seen on a woman. I need to be around it,'" Shepard said of his now-wife. "I want to be around it when I’m 80, but how?"

The answer? Plenty of compromise and work. Although they'd gotten to a good place, Kristen Bell admitted she'd given up on ever getting married to Shepard. "I had surrendered, like 'Okay, well, I’m never going to get any sort of traditional marriage out of this, and that’s okay because I trust him,'" Bell said, but Dax Shepard had a surprise up his sleeve.

"Ultimately, I was like, ‘Well, I’m doing it because my partner wants that,'" explained Shepard, revealing his reasoning behind proposing to his love in 2009. Four years later, they were married, and with a five-year-old and a four-year-old to take care of, the pair have taken stock of where they've got to in the present day.

"All these movies from the ’80s taught us that it’s love at first sight, and it is supposed to be easy and all you have to do is find that person," Bell explained. "It took me a while to realize, 'Oh, that was such a lie,' because things that you work really, really, really hard for always yield the best results."

It's always heartwarming to hear of a couple who've managed to work things out, and although they might seem like chalk and cheese at first glance, Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell's incredible chemistry means that the pair will continue to love and compromise for one another.

They really are relationship goals, aren't they?
