Demi Moore has opened up about Bruce Willis' dementia diagnosis, and how she had to "let go" of how her former husband used to be.
In February 2023, the Willis family revealed that the legendary Die Hard star had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, following an aphasia diagnosis in 2022.
During a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s Radio Andy, Demi Moore, who shares three daughters, Rumer, Tallulah, and Scout, with Willis, spoke candidly about his well-being.
Responding to host Andy Cohen's inquiry about advice for others facing similar situations, the 61-year-old shared: "I think the most important thing I could share is just to meet them where they’re at."
She emphasized the significance of letting go of preconceived notions and expectations, urging listeners to appreciate the present and find joy in the love that remains.
Moore stated. "When you let go of who they’ve been, or who you think they [should be], or who even you would like them to be, you can then really stay in the present and take in the joy, and the love, that is present and there for all that they are, not all that they’re not."
Expanding on this sentiment during a subsequent interview on Good Morning America, she added: "I think, given the [circumstances], he’s doing very well. What I’ll share is what I say to my children – it’s important to just meet them where they’re at and not hold on to what isn’t, but what is. Because there’s great beauty and sweetness, and loving and joy out of that."
Moore and Willis were married in 1987, welcoming three daughters before their separation in 1998. Despite finalizing their divorce in 2000, they have maintained a close friendship for the sake of their family. Moore also shares a strong bond with Willis' current wife, Emma Heming Willis.
When Willis was diagnosed, Heming Willis provided additional insights into her husband's condition, stating: "Bruce has always believed in using his voice to help others, and to raise awareness about important issues. Your continued compassion, understanding, and respect will enable us to help Bruce live as full a life as possible."
As December came to a close, the couple celebrated 16 years of marriage. Heming Willis commemorated the milestone by sharing intimate snapshots of the couple hugging and kissing.
Reflecting on their journey, she captioned the photos: "16 years with this special man. My love and adoration for him only grows."
The couple first met in 2007, three years after Willis' separation from Brooke Burns, and they exchanged vows in a ceremony in Turks and Caicos on March 21, 2009. They later welcomed two daughters, Evelyn and Mabel, aged nine and 11, respectively.
