How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris has sparked an online conversation following a recent Instagram post with his family.
While many may best recognise the star for his role as Barney Stinson in the long-running CBS sitcom, Harris lives a far different life to his on-screen character.
The 53-year-old entertainer is a well-known LGBTQ+ rights activist, and is himself married to fellow actor David Burtka, as they tied the knot in 2014 after 10 years together.
Harris and Burtka also share two children, son Gideon and daughter Harper, who are twins, born in 2010.
The couple has even shared snaps of their kids on the day of their birth in the past, which led to many fans being shocked at the latest snaps.
In the wholesome image, the kids can be seen standing between their dads, bringing fans to the exact same conclusion.
The children were born in 2010, meaning that they are 16 this year, and it seems like fans can't handle the fact that they are nearing adulthood.
Social media users posted about how grown up the teens looked, as one fan wrote: “Beautiful family! They’re not babies anymore. Time sure does fly by.”
Another added: “Aw, they’re adults now, I knew. Gideon would look like you, but wow. Beautiful preteen adults.”
“Wait a minute now, how are they that grown up already??” a third said.
A different fan pointed out how both children look like both parents, despite only being biologically related to one of them, saying: “The way both kids manage to look like both parents when they’re biologically one of each is just amazing.”
The couple have spoken about their desire to raise children, as Burtka told Out magazine that "if he hadn’t wanted kids, I don’t think we’d be together."
In order to have children, they used an IVF process which involved both of them contributing their own sperm, meaning either twin could be biologically linked to either dad.
Harris explained to Barbara Walters in 2024: “We inserted one of my sp*rm and one of David’s sp*rm into two eggs with the hope that they would both take, just because we both wanted to be dads biologically. Both took, miraculously.”
He previously explained that he doesn't care to find out which twin is his, saying that "we are their parents and I love them implicitly.”
Back on May 11, the family attended Family Equality’s gala in New York City, where Harris and Burtka were honored with the Luminary Award.
The couple were presented with the award by Elton John and David Furnish, celebrated both men's "visibility, advocacy and enduring commitment to LGBTQ+ families," according to PEOPLE.
According to Entertainment Tonight, the 15-year-old siblings, Harper and Gideon, delivered an emotional tribute filled with jokes aimed directly at their dads.
Gideon joked: "We had twice the dad jokes, and zero the improvement."
Harper added: "Whenever I’m confused or doubting myself, papa just turns to me and repeats the family motto: 'What would Doogie do?'"
The joke referenced Harris’ breakout role as teenage doctor Doogie Howser in Doogie Howser, M.D.

Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka’s teenage twins took a few playful shots at their famous dads during a heartfelt speech.
The How I Met Your Mother actor, 52, and his husband, 50, were honored with the Luminary Award at Family Equality’s gala in New York City on May 11.
The award, which was presented by Elton John and David Furnish, celebrated both men's 'visibility, advocacy and enduring commitment to LGBTQ+ families,' cited by PEOPLE.
According to Entertainment Tonight, the 15-year-old siblings, Harper and Gideon, delivered an emotional tribute filled with jokes aimed directly at their dads.
Gideon joked: "We had twice the dad jokes, and zero the improvement," while Harper said: "Whenever I’m confused or doubting myself, papa just turns to me and repeats the family motto: 'What would Doogie do?'"
The joke referenced Harris’ breakout role as teenage doctor Doogie Howser in Doogie Howser, M.D.
After the event, Harris took to Instagram to share photos from the gala and reflected on the special night in the caption.
"We were so honored to be, well, honored by @familyequality with their Luminary Award at this year’s Gala. And introduced by @eltonjohn and @davidfurnish, no less!" he wrote.
"An absolutely wonderful night for a remarkable organization. I’m so proud of my family. Just… yeah. They make me so proud. I feel very #grateful."
Fans quickly flooded the comments section after seeing how grown-up the twins looked.
"Congratulations! The kids are so grown up!" one person wrote.
Another added: "How did your kids grow up soooo fast!!"
"What a Beautiful family!” someone else commented.
A third added: "Your children have grown up to be so beautiful and I know they are good people too because you are and David are good people."
The couple, who got married in 2014 after publicly confirming their relationship in 2007, welcomed Gideon and Harper via surrogate in 2010.
They previously spoke about the process, explaining that one of Harris' sperm and one of Burtka’s sperm were implanted into separate eggs.
Both embryos successfully developed.
In a 2014 interview with Barbara Walters, Harris explained why he has never wanted to know which child is biologically his.
"I have no interest in [finding out]. We are their parents, and I love them implicitly," he said.
However, he added that he has his suspicions as he sees himself 'in each of them at different times'.

Don't you just love it when we find out hidden secrets about celebrities?
Well, get excited, because we have a doozy for you. When Neil Patrick Harris recently appeared on American panel show The View, he stunned the audience by revealing a risqué secret about Whoopi Goldberg.
It all started when the pair's 1988 film Clara's Heart was brought up. The American drama movie, which told the story of a family in crisis, was Patrick's debut role and he was only a teenager when he starred in it.
[[youtubewidget||https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKumudSfy24]]
It was all pretty innocent at first, with Goldberg giggling and telling her former co-star: "I’m laughing because I remember you at that age."
However, the nostalgic moment was turned on its head when Harris revealed that the older actress promised to sleep with him when he was "15 or 16".
"You know, I did my first movie ever with Whoopi Goldberg – a movie called Clara’s Heart – and we worked together on that," the 45-year-old said. "I was 15, 16 years old. She told me on my last day of shooting, that in ten years time she was going to have sex with me."
The audience was left stunned, erupting in a mixture of shock and laughter at the news of the mildly inappropriate proposition. However, the now 62-year-old Goldberg was cool as a cucumber, sitting at the opposite end of the table with a smirk and quipping: "I might’ve!"

She continued to explain her comments, as well attacking the PC society many people believe we live in, saying: "He had many questions as a kid, so I said, ‘Listen, wait 10 years, and I’ll take you through it.’ In those days, you could actually have some fun like that. You Can’t do that now. People get very upset now."
Fortunately for the Sister Act actress, the How I Met Your Mother star found the whole situation highly amusing, stating that he was "not offended" and was "looking forward to it".
In response to the suggestion that the romp in the sheets still could happen, Goldberg said: "Well, if I can find it, you can have it."

In the same interview, the Series of Unfortunate Events actor spoke out about his own experience coming out as gay, ahead of National Coming Out Day on Thursday
"When I came out, the ceiling didn't crash in — I was able to stand taller and be more ... transparent about who I was," the actor, who has been married to his husband David Burtka since 2014, told the co-hosts. "I didn't have to be so guarded. And in turn, I think that allows your light to shine a little bit brighter."
He continued: "Some people... know who they are at a very, very early age —- and some people are married with kids and are still struggling with it. There's religious reasons, there's political reasons, there's familial reasons."
Harris finished up by saying that he "applauds" the holiday, stating that some "can use it as a conversation starter if they're not sure about how to broach the conversation."
Well, that sure was a mixed bag of interview topics.

Tom Cruise has shared a rare photo of himself with two of his kids that he shares with Nicole Kidman.
Former NFL player Derrick Brooks, who snapped the shot, recently resurfaced the image from December 2023.
"Good Evening, Wow, look who stopped by my office before our [Tampa Bay Lightning] game tonight! @tomcruise," the retired athlete wrote in his Instagram post.
"I was a little star struck but played it cool and He said he was too!"
In the photo shared on social media, Cruise stood proudly with his arm around Brooks, while his 29-year-old son, Connor, flashed a thumbs up from Brooks' other side.
Also featured in the picture was Cruise and Kidman's daughter, Bella, peeking out alongside a dozen other individuals.
The former couple adopted Bella, now 31, in 1992 amid fertility struggles, and welcomed Connor into the family three years later. Kidman, 56, and Cruise, 61, were married from 1990 to 2001.
Following their divorce, Cruise went on to marry Katie Holmes, with whom he shares a daughter, Suri. However, he is now estranged from the 18-year-old.
Kidman, on the other hand, welcomed daughters Sunday, 15, and Faith, 13, with husband Keith Urban.
While Kidman has issued rare statements about Isabella and Connor over the years, acknowledging their involvement in Scientology, she has emphasized her unconditional love for them.
In 2018, she told Who magazine: "I am an example of that tolerance and that’s what I believe – that no matter what your child does, the child has love and the child has to know there is available love and I’m open here."
After their marriage ended in divorce after 11 years, joint custody was agreed upon, but reports suggest that the children, loyal to their father, opted to live primarily with Cruise, being raised within the Church of Scientology, per the Daily Mail.
Since 2007, Kidman has not been publicly pictured with her eldest children. Reports claim she was deeply affected by their absence at her father’s funeral in 2014, and their non-attendance at her recent lifetime achievement award ceremony further emphasized the distance in their relationship.
Despite being mostly out of the public eye, Bella, who married husband Max Parker in 2015, occasionally shares glimpses of her life through art and selfies on social media. Meanwhile, Connor enjoys fishing and runs a barbecue business, Connor's Meatshack.
