It turns out that perhaps Kim Kardashian deserves more credit for her 2021 Met Gala outfit.
The 40-year-old reality TV megastar certainly got tongues wagging following Monday's event, which saw her walk the red carpet covered head-to-toe in an all-black attire.
Her unique look was designed and made by Georgian fashion icon Demna Gvasalia, who is also the creative director of Balenciaga. The look saw Kim's hair sleeked back into a long ponytail and ensured that no part of her skin - even her face - was on show.
But the out-there look wasn't appreciated as much as Kardashian may have hoped, and it was quickly given the meme treatment on social media - with some people joking that Kim had turned up to the event dressed as a dementor from Harry Potter.
However, it seems that some people may have been too quick to judge the star on her look.
You see, the theme for this year's Met Gala was 'In America: A Lexicon of Fashion', and while some celebrity looks appeared to hit this assignment on the nose - Billie Eilish channeling Marilyn Monroe, for example - there's more to Kim's look than meets the eye.
Kardashian has since shared images from her look with her 253 million fans, along with the caption: "What’s more American than a T-shirt head to toe?!"
And what's more, fashion editor Maximilian Kilworth has taken to Twitter to perfectly explain why Kim's look was actually "very clever".
"Kim Kardashian in Balenciaga. So fitting with the theme which was 'In America: A Lexicon of Fashion'. Kim herself is the epitome of American culture; famous for being famous. She didn't have to wear 'anything' because she is recognizable no matter what. Very clever," he wrote.
And you have to agree - Kim is such an American staple that she was hitting headlines and had people talking about her the next day without even showing her face!
As one of her Instagram followers commented: "Honey YOU are THE American Style!!! Only YOUUU can go dressed like that and be immediately recognized!"
So... I guess Kim Kardashian won the Met Gala?
