Being a celebrity in the 21st century is something akin to living in the never-ceasing glare of an incredibly bright light.

No matter what you do as a celebrity, people are going to have something to say about it. Whether it's the outfit you step out in to go and pick up the groceries (just kidding, what celebrity still picks up their own groceries?), or your relationships and love lives, we are all in thrall to the lives of the rich and famous.

Perhaps we're living vicariously through them - we're now able to do so with more vivid detail than ever before thanks to the filtered corridors of Instagram - or perhaps, we're more magpie-like, enthralled by the glitz and glamour of it all, the trappings of fame.

Either way, celebrities are more visible now to their public than at any other point in history, largely thanks to the rise of social media.

Gwyneth Paltrow appears to forget that she starred in Spiderman: Homecoming:

This is, of course, something of a double-edged sword. On the one hand, social media has granted celebrities a direct means of communication with their legions of supporters - no editorialising, no outside opinions. However, this comes with a price, as fans (and, more often, trolls) are able to give their opinions and criticisms straight back, in the many thousands of comments that sit underneath each perfectly presented Instagram upload.

Gwyneth Paltrow is one celebrity who has used social media expertly to grow her own brand.

Paltrow often extolls the virtues of her modern lifestyle brand, Goop, on her social media channels, but it was a different snap altogether that caught the public's attention last night. Fox News reports that the actresses' friend, journalist Derek Blasberg, posted a picture of Paltrow alongside her daughter, Apple, who looks astonishingly like her mother, and Paltrow's own mother Blythe Danner.

Blasberg wrote;

"Today is the middle one's birthday, but let’s celebrate the entire Danner-Paltrow-Martin bloodline. Here are three kind, talented, sweet, lithe (rhymes with Blythe!), wonderful women. The apple doesn't fall from the tree—and neither does Apple. Wishing you the absolute bestest year ever @gwynethpaltrow! ??"

And hundreds of positive comments rolled in about how great the trio looked.

Back in May, Paltrow posted another picture of her with her daughter Apple, and youngest son Moses.
